Wichita police and federal agents investigated a possible sighting of Frank Wetzel the suspected slayer of two North Carolina troopers. A man resembling Wetzel was seen in Augusta and later located in Wichita. investigators did not release the man’s name and said the lead proved false.
Transfer of the U S Army Food Service School from Fort Riley to Fort Leonard Wood Missouri began today as part of a reorganization of service schools.
Parsons city commission votes to abandon condemnation on all but two acres of Roy Weast’s 100 acre tract for a water reservoir. district court to appraise two acres remaining. Change in dam location west of the Weast farm prompts the deal shift. Weast opposes the lake project amid injunction bids by five owners. total original condemnation covered 1321 acres with appraisers valuing Weast land at 20000 plus 2273 crops damages and 1825 to Fred S Clark for oil and gas lease. Hart couple awarded 12600 for land and 2000 damages.
The Morse Chamber of Commerce reports cost estimates for the Osa and Martin Johnson museum will not be ready for at least 30 days. The Museum Committee met with Coffeyville architects in a series of interviews with Pittsburg and Wichita architects planned next. A final building plan may be revised by the chamber before a bond issue vote.
Police investigate the disappearance of five pounds of opium valued at $5,000 from the court of Superior Judge Walter Carpeneti. The narcotic, placed under the counsel table for safekeeping, was set to be used as evidence in a trial and vanished yesterday from the San Francisco court.
Betty Corstorphine, 35, blinded since 1939 by optic nerve tumor, underwent brain testing with a photo electric cell linked to brain wires at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. The device produced flashes and a sense of light, sparking optimism from Dr. John C. Button that electronic vision could aid most blind people within five years.
West Plains Missouri three young Upton children Peggy Sue 6 Kenneth 3 and Johnny 9 months perished in a house fire. New York police tracked a professional burglar who had hit multiple homes over four months stealing hundreds of dollars from hiding places without disturbing rooms. The suspect, a 9 year old girl with a prior arrest at age six, broke down crying when found rifling a mailbox and later admitted the thefts. El Dorado sophomore Frank Hamblin has broken bones repeatedly, most recently a leg fracture at basketball practice Tuesday. At age 15 he has accumulated 14 broken bones, joking he will have one for each year before turning 16.
