City reports the new low water dam north of town will back up water about eight miles once operational, with the Chanute conservation pool ending near but below the Humboldt dam. A Humboldt dam leak reduced storage briefly, then repairs restored levels.
Six head of cattle missing from a Chanute Sales Pavilion pen were mistakenly hauled away. They had been bought by Frank Young and were held for vaccination. Police say Allen Brothers of Coffeyville also owned six head in another pen and a truck driver took the wrong pen Thursday night.
Prague radio reports nine Czechoslovak citizens including three women were sentenced to prison terms from 3 to 25 years for espionage said to be on behalf of the United States. Czech radio and Communist papers urged vigilance against spies saboteurs and subversives amid post Hungarian revolt tensions.

A naval training plane from Key West Florida crashed onto a north Atlanta yard in murky skies injuring six aboard. The occupants all from the Key West Naval Air Station included Pilot Lt Cmdr MacLaughlin Copilot Ens Herbert Carlberg and passengers Ens Wallace Hutcheson Michael Topalian Frank Mugnier and Richard Eland. They were taken to Grady Hospital with bruises cuts and other injuries.
