At Paris Island South Carolina a Marine drill instructor, Pfc. Frederick A. Renton, 19, was sentenced to one year of hard labor and a bad conduct discharge for forcing recruits to suspend themselves by elbows and toes with bayonets under their stomachs. He also forfeited pay. He admitted punching Pvt. Bradford S. Howe in the stomach after Howe failed to remove a mattress from a barracks for airing, and violating a depot order against touching recruits without training purpose.
The Air Force says reported plane and personnel movements at Strategic Air Command bases are routine training operations unrelated to overseas crises. SAC regularly shifts units among bases in the United States to prevent enemy pinpointing of locations.

Charles England of 1923 S Edith reported backing a trash loaded 1937 Chevrolet toward a sanitary trench when embers from the rubbish fire ignited rubbish under the truck. Firefighters arrived at 12:17 p.m. and the vehicle, not insured, was destroyed. England suffered singed hair and an ear before escaping. He then left, the truck rolled into the trench and burned. Earlier, at 10:31 a.m., Grace Stitt reported a stove fire at 1020 N Steuben.
Topeka reports sunshine and light winds as a slow warming trend returns across Kansas. Weekend forecast calls for fair and warmer conditions with a low of 25 to 30 tonight and a high in the 50s Saturday.
