Valley Hope to Expand with 14-Bed Women Unit in Norton
Valley Hope Alcoholic Treatment Center in Norton Kansas announces a major expansion adding a 14 bed women unit for the wives and mothers of male patients. Dr William Leipold says Norton motel property has been leased with option to purchase to accommodate the new facility four miles from Norton State Hospital. The 20 bed Norton State Hospital facility is leased from the state for $1 a year and is heavily used. The center opened August 15 and will employ a woman vocational rehabilitation worker to live at the women’s center. Valley Hope is run by the Kansas Association for Alcoholic Treatment, a non profit.

Car Damaged In Night Crash On Highway K47
Norma L. Golden 22 of Wichita drove a 1966 Chevrolet that struck a truck on Highway K47 two miles north of Urbana around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported. damage to the Chevrolet was about 650 dollars. The truck sustained negligible damage. A 1960 IHC owned by Harold Heilman was driven by Harold Stroud of Chanute.

Supreme Court extends right to counsel to probation revocation

Neurological Surgeon Ends His Life in Kansas City
Dr. William P. Williamson a 50 year old professor of neurological surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center shot himself at home. He had been ill and returned Saturday after three weeks in a hospital. Williamson led the neurological surgery section 1951 63 and had recent service on the hospital ship S S Hope. He chaired the Kansas Medical Society committee on medicine and religion and was former president of the Wyandotte County Medical Society.

Christmas Seal Letters Mailed For 61st Campaign
Neosho County Tuberculosis and Health Association begins the 61st annual Christmas Seal Campaign with about 4,500 letters prepared by the Senior High School office practice class. Eight girls addressed envelopes funded by local programs to aid tuberculosis work in Kansas through the state association. The Seals feature a train design from the 80s in Christmas colors, and 93 cents of each dollar stays in state. Funds support tuberculin skin tests chest X rays health education and patient services.

Clemen tine Paddleford aged 67, famed food editor for the New York Herald Tribune and World Journal Tribune, died today at New York Hospital. Woman Parachutist Killed at Fort Leavenworth
Sgt. 1C Dona L. McDonald, 30, of Aberdeen Washington, the Fort Leavenworth Sport Parachute Club's only woman member, died when her parachute failed to open during an 8000 foot jump. Two male teammates survived as their chutes opened normally. She joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1956.
