Eight Die in Cincinnati Basement Fire
A Cincinnati basement fire killed eight people, seven of them children, in a three story brick apartment building. The victims included Edna Dyas, 26, and her five children plus Terry Jane Clark and Larry Dell Clark. Three others were injured as they fled the blaze.

Veteran Bugler Fulfills WWI Dream in Paris Memorial
Hartley Edwards, 61, of Denison Texas, returned to France to play taps for fallen comrades at an Armistice Day ceremony under the Arch of Triumph. He earlier played taps at Compiegne cemetery and last performed at Paris Independence Day in 1919 with Gen Pershing’s 50-man drum and bugle corps.

Weather in Kansas turns cooler after a warm spell
A minor cool front crossed Kansas overnight lowering temperatures by up to ten degrees in some areas. Forecasters predicted another pleasant day with highs in the 60s and no moisture in sight. Yesterday highs ranged from 67 at Goodland to 80 at Wichita. Lows last night varied from 28 at Goodland to 48 at Pittsburg.

Boy Rescued From Maze of Sewers in Oklahoma City
Firemen and police helped an 11 year old boy named Ronald Gene Sprouse who wandered into a storm sewer outlet in southwest Oklahoma City and became lost. Searchers pried off manhole covers and located him by calling into the sewers.

Coffeyville Couple Killed in Rural Car Crash
D M Connel, 84, and his wife 78 died when their car struck a concrete culvert on a country road six miles southwest of Coffeyville. Neighbor Oscar Roberts, 48, was riding with them and hospitalized with injuries. Deputy reports Connel may have been blinded by oncoming car lights.

The board of regents announced the appointment of Dr Leonard Axe 56 as president of Pittsburg State Teachers College effective July 1 He will succeed Rees Hughes 65 who retires and will remain on the faculty as professor Axe has been dean of the University of Kansas School of Business since 1947 with prior professorships at KU He studied at Baker University Council Grove High School KU and University of Michigan and taught in Council Grove High School He recently toured Europe representing the United States on business education and is active in the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business and the Rotary Club

A Prairie Village Kansas couple Lester F. George and Katherine George died from dense smoke after a fire started in the living room. Neighbors saw flames, attempted to wake them, then alerted authorities. The fire was confined to the living room and the cause remained undetermined.

Harry Sinclair founder of Sinclair Oil Co and central figure in the Teapot Dome scandal died at 80 in Pasadena after four months of illness. Born July 16 1876 in Wheeling West Virginia he built an oil empire by age 35 and led major moves including Richfield Oil Corp chairmanship. He left a widow Elizabeth a son Harry F Sinclair Jr and a daughter.

First Lt. Delbert Max Johnson died in a plane crash near Holton Kansas after making two passes over his parents home during a flight from Peoria Illinois to Tucson Arizona. He ferried the plane solo for the Air National Guard and was a Kansas State College Manhattan graduate.
