Chanute Veterans Day Parade slated for tomorrow

The first annual Chanute Veterans Day parade starts at 10 a.m. from City Park, routing west on Main to Forest. Local and area bands, drum corps, scouts, veteran groups, and National Guard join in. prizes include 150 for top floats and 10 for best decorated bicycles, with hot dogs, soda, coffee, and donuts offered at designated post-parade locations.

Four-Count Charge Dismissed in Wichita Case

A four-count charge against H. O. Turner of Wichita was dismissed in district court on motion by County Attorney Richard L. Ashley after the complainant Lloyd Moulton of Chanute withdrew prosecution following restitution for the checks. The checks related to hog purchases last summer and the case had been set for a jury trial. Remaining Chanute docket jury trials shift to Wednesday with Ed Elmer versus MFA Mutual Insurance Co.

Kansas TB Hospital Budget Cuts Spark Hearings

Hearings proceed in Topeka over budget reductions for 11 state hospitals including Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital and Parsons State Hospital. Southeast Kansas TB Hospital original operating budget $536,823 plus $78,000 for capital improvements was trimmed to $462,581 with no capital funds. Parsons State Hospital proposed $2,489,988 operating and $545,000 capital. Budget Department cut to $2,274,727 and $35,000.

Failure of Engines Described by Pilot

Richmond AP report states Imperial Air Constellation pilot described two engines out and one losing power before a failed emergency landing at Byrd Field. The craft crashed into woods two miles from the runway killing 74 Army recruits and three crew. Pilot Ronald H. Conway survived with his wife Beverly and flight engineer William Poythress also surviving. Federal officials removed engines for study as Army moved recruits by train and bus while investigations continued.

Stuttgart Kansas AP report says grain inspector Stanley A. Ayres age 44 of Kansas City fell from the top of a Stuttgart elevator while inspecting grain. Ayres formerly lived in Eldon Missouri until nine years ago.

Veterans Day Closures Noted for Chanute Area

Most Chanute businesses and offices will close for Veterans Day tomorrow. State county and city offices and the post office will be closed. local groceries will shut 9 to 11 a.m. for the parade, with many staying closed all day. The Tribune will publish.

Legion Plans Remodeling at American Legion Building

The Boerstler- May post approved a remodeling project adding 1300 square feet to the 301 N Evergreen building. Post commander Bill Roberts said an architect will meet with officers next Tuesday to approve plans with sealed bids for the contract. The expansion will add a kitchen, a women's lounge, lounge improvements, storage, new furnishings, and an exterior front remodel. Wayne Johnson of Springfield Mo will serve as architect.

Fire disrupts Johnson visit at Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City

A grease fire in the 850 room Muehlebach Hotel caused smoke and forced nearly 900 guests to evacuate as Vice President Lyndon Johnson prepared to speak. Four hotel workers and three firefighters were treated for smoke exposure, and Johnson departed for Austin after the incident.
