The state motor vehicle department announced mail renewal forms will be mailed from Topeka after November 15. Forms may be mailed to the county treasurer or presented in person. mail reduces lines and speeds processing. Vehicle tags issued later, with cost and tax proof required. 1962 tags are green with white lettering.

Slight Fire Damage at S F Allen Home

Firefighters were called to 202 S Ruter Stan ley F Allen residence at 10:20 AM after natural gas from a copper tubing stove connection ignited. Assistant chief Charles Ogle said a mop contact with an electric wire likely sparked the blaze, scorching a wall panel and damaging 220 volt insulation.

Traffic Crashes Fatal to Three in Kansas

A rash of highway accidents in Kansas killed three. In Lyndon area, Emmett Denney and Wayne Cole died in a near head on collision on U S 75. Pierce Musgrove Jr died in Wichita after a crash with guard rails on an overpass. Cecil Workman perished near Ulysses in a collision with an empty transport truck. Oscar Annis escaped unharmed.

Collision with steer damages Bonine car

Thayer report states a 1959 Ram driven by Herman Bonine 50 of Thayer R 2 struck a Black Angus steer on a county road one mile south and a mile east of Thayer last night. The steer weighing about 600 pounds escaped from a drainage ditch and was identified as owned by Leck Gerhart. Bonine wife and daughter Patricia were unharmed. time of the accident was about 8 o'clock. Undersheriff Lester Marts was the investigating officer.

Safari Museum elects Cooper president and lists officers

Phillip Cooper was elected president of Safari Museum Inc at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. M. L. Morton is vice president and E. E. Rosenthal secretary treasurer. Seven directors include Cooper Rosenthal Morton and Blunk who is named curator. The museum reports $844.79 cash, $1,000 bank payables, and $2,233.56 in sales with $1,017.49 in donations since June. The museum opened in the 100 block on South Grant June 11 and attracts steady attendance, with Sundays busiest.

Plane crash near Richmond kills 77 recruits and crew

A Imperial Airlines Constellation crashed near Byrd Airport in Richmond killing 77 people and injuring others. Only the pilot and flight engineer survived. seven body identifications may not be complete. The plane carried 78 on board with four crew members and 74 servicemen.

Chanute Veterans Day Parade Opens Local Celebration

Chanute hosts its first annual Veterans Day parade on Saturday at 10 am from City Park to Forest. Ten floats compete for 40 25 and 15 prizes with 10 guaranteed. veteran entries excluded. Bandit Robs Goodman State Bank and Flees in Old Car

An unmasked heavyset bandit robbed the Goodman State Bank in Goodman, Missouri, forcing Esther Adkins to surrender about $3,000. He fled in a grey 1950 Mercury with Kansas plates, leaving Mrs. Adkins and Omogene Fitzjohn unharmed. FBI questioning in Pittsburg, Kansas found no arrests.

County Road Bid Openings Set for Chanute Area

Erie officials report bid openings for two Chanute area county secondary road projects on December 5. One job covers three miles of widening grading and culverts from 21st and Plummer to Wilson County line with later rock and asphalt work. the other is a half mile of grading with a 25 foot drainage ditch bridge. Right of way is nearly cleared. Plan approvals include 50 percent federal funding.
