State Department announces 5000? Pink slips to workers

About 500 State Department employees will receive termination notices between Navy Day and December 1 due to funding shortfalls. Dismissals cut into the 7200 staff, with at least 500 notices planned. Some transfers to other agencies and FBI/Civil Service help are expected to cover security investigations.

Compromise Reached Over Ducktail Haircut at Perry High

In Perry Georgia a senior boy suspended for a ducktail haircut will return with hair styled differently. Principal Eric Staples cited delinquency links but school board and parents reached an accord. Parents Mr and Mrs Walter C Sorrells plan to continue court action next week challenging the school ban on unconventional cuts.

North Carolina Crash Kills Four Teens Near Wilkesboro

Four teenagers died and two were injured when their car overturned on a curve near Wilkesboro North Carolina. The car reportedly traveled at high speed before crashing through a field and rolling several times. Deceased were Archie Eugene Jordan 17 James Burchett 17 Joseph Charles Waddell 15 and Leonard H Byrd 15 all from nearby towns. injured were Alvin Reece Jolly 16 and Frankie Clifton 18.

Independence Fire Fatal to Couple

A man and a woman died in a blaze that gutted a two room dwelling in Independence Kansas. The victims were Mrs Gertrude Vann about 50 and Grant Turner about 60. Neighbor Matthew Johnson found the fire at around 1 30 a m and Turner was rescued but died hours later. The woman was found between a stove and a wall and authorities suspect a burning cigarette on a mattress started the fire.

Real estate salesman jailed for Bel Air painting theft

A Santa Monica man received a prison term of 2 to 10 years after pleading guilty to stealing paintings valued at 670000 from a Bel Air mansion. The defendant admitted taking multiple works from the residence.

Chanute Veterans Day Parade Draws Hundreds in Town

Hundreds gathered in the Chanute business district for a Veterans Day parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street from City Park to Forest, with local bands and floats. After the parade, veterans groups served hot dogs and soda. $150 in prize money went to top floats and $10 to best decorated bicycles. Insurance claims soar after Bel-Air Topanga fires

Risk claims range from 185 to 700000 with an average around 50000 as adjusters from across the West descend on Southern California. Some 450 homes were destroyed mainly in Bel-Air while insured losses total about 24 million with 32 adjusters flown in to assist a local staff of 82.

Three Killed In Head On Crash Near Atchison

A Friday night head on collision 3.2 miles south of Atchison on US 73 killed Paul Guth 45 of Kansas City Kansas and Clifford Campbell 20 and Johnny Ray Rogers 22 of Atchison. A 13 year old passenger Michael Lindquist suffered a fractured skull and was listed in critical condition. His cousin Tim Lindquist also injured.

FBI arrests man for bank robbery in Goodman Missouri

The FBI says Harold Eugene Landrum 30 was arrested in Miami Oklahoma and charged with the Wednesday robbery of Goodman State Bank in Goodman Missouri He will be arraigned today before the U S Commissioner at Miami.

False alarms disrupt city as hoax calls mount

Unidentified person made several hoax calls last night including a fake robbery report to a cafe on South Plummer and a bogus fire alarm call while officers investigated. Fire units were halted and a mortuary later reported two calls about a supposed death.

Crash Fatal for McPherson Youth

In McPherson Kansas a car struck a motorcycle carrying two local youths. Lawrence L. Hall 17 was killed and Ralph F. Wade 15 was seriously injured. Driver Elvin Lewis 26 of Hays said he was traveling about 60 mph when he overtook the bike. No one in the car hurt. McPherson County’s 10th traffic death of the year.

In Rochester suburb of Greece an out-of-town motorist ran out of gas and a cooperative policeman brought him a can. While pouring into the tank the gas ran out on the street. Police said the car’s gas tank had fallen off several miles earlier.

Atlas Explosion Not Delaying Chimp Orbit Flight

CAPE CANAVERAL FLA AP officials say the Atlas missile explosion that killed a small monkey will not delay next week’s attempt to launch a chimpanzee into orbit. The 100th Atlas, an advanced E model, blew up in flight causing the death of Goliath the 12 pound squirrel monkey. A week-long delay could threaten orbiting a U.S. chimp this year, part of NASA’s space program. The launch was not connected to Project Mercury.

Car Sale Ends in Tear Gas Incident

Norman Grunsfeld, 23, was crying after attempting to sell his mother-in-law's car in Dallas. A device hidden under the front seat exploded when handed to him by a dealer, spraying tear gas and injuring both men. No suspect identity is known.

Three Airmen Die In Missouri Crash Near Danville

Three Air Force officers stationed at Vance AFB Oklahoma were killed when a truck sideswiped a car, crossed into the wrong lane, and struck the officers’ car on U.S. 40 near Mineola Hill two miles west of Danville. Four noninjury crashes reported to police

Police recorded four noninjury traffic accidents over two days. An Edsel driven by Jim L. McCoy collided with a Mercury driven by W. W. Ford at Main and Western causing front Edsel and rear Mercury damage. A second crash at 18th and Santa Fe involved Don Hammer and Edsel Noland with front and rear damage. Noland’s Mercury bumper was scraped in a curb strike at 320 E. Main. A K39 east collision near town between Dixie Stitt and Charles Brooks caused rear door damage to Brooks’ car with no injuries.

Minutemen Probe Finds No San Francisco Plot

In San Francisco AP reports the Minutemen civil defense group did plan to kill the governor and attorney general in wartime. Deputy Attorney General Arlo E. Smith said the investigation found the claim untrue and officers continue probing. He noted possession of machine guns by individuals is illegal in California.
