Saturn 5 launches Apollo 4 on maiden flight from Cape Kennedy
The Saturn 5 rocket lifted at 7 a.m. EST on its first test flight carrying the 40 ton Apollo 4 space vehicle. The 115 mile high orbit followed by two orbits of Earth tested the heat shield during a planned return dive at 4 500 degree reentry temperatures. NASA officials praised the mission as a major boost to the Apollo program and confidence in reaching the Moon this decade. The mission ended with the first stage exploding and the other stages burning up in reentry over the Atlantic Pacific areas.

$1 000 Loss In Erie Theft
Erie television tubes tools and equipment valued at 1000 dollars were stolen from a television service car at the Lewis Edwards residence northeast of here during the night. Edwards runs a television shop in Erie. The home lies two miles north and two and a half miles east on highway K146. Police said entry appeared skilled and the car was locked. Evidence of a car in the driveway and some items found discarded about a mile west.

Grace Wilkie, Former Fairmont Dean, Dies at 83
Grace Wilkie 83 former dean of women at Fairmont College and the University of Wichita died in Wichita. A 1912 KU graduate she became a professor of home economics and department head at Fairmont College.
