Voter tallies showed county and national races neck and neck through much of Tuesday evening as precincts reported results. Local observers noted close contest dynamics with early leads shifting as ballots were counted.
Jimmy Carter defeats Gerald Ford in a razor thin race securing 297 electoral votes to Ford's 241. Carter blasts through the South and key states including Ohio and Texas while Ford concedes only near dawn. Carter vows tax reform and federal aid for the poor as Mondale stands by him.
Incumbent Republicans in state Senate and House races were routed in the area Tuesday. George H. Works won re election in the 10th District. Jim Guffey and Mike Johnston unseated Harris and Hudson in the 5th and 14th Districts. Total vote tallies show Guffey and Johnston securing clear margins while Harris and Hudson fell short in Neosho Labette and surrounding counties. Works defeated Gerald Doughty by 60 percent and 4 363 votes to 3 166. County races favored Republicans with incumbents faring better.
Andrea Grove reports that Ford led in Allen Woodson and Wilson counties over Carter in a local popular vote. Ford tallied 3,269 votes to 2,746 in Allen County and 1,104 votes in Woodson County, with Ford ahead by 1,456 votes across the three counties of 12,750 cast.
With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Kansas residents approved a land-use value amendment by 56 percent to 44 percent allowing farm land to be taxed on income rather than sale value. The measure could prompt enabling legislation next year and several tax options are under study by lawmakers and farm groups.

State and federal funds would match locally funded operations with endowment support. The plan aims to boost education, music and sports coverage across nine counties. Trustees back planning grants and input from area agencies.

Neosho County reports 8,207 voters turnout on Tuesday with 79 percent of 10,350 registered casting ballots. Chanute saw 4,484 of 6,164 voters, 76 percent, up from 1972 but below 1968 peak. Combined presidential vote reached 8,031, higher than 1972 and 1968 figures.
