Turnout Slips in Chanute Kansas Elections

Voter turnout in Chanute lagged behind state projections with about 32 percent of the 6,164 eligible residents casting ballots by noon. At nine stations 1,963 ballots were counted versus 2,080 in 1972 and 2,108 in 1968, while overall state estimates hovered around 80 percent of registered voters potentially voting.

School board weighs new computer purchase at Chanute High

USD 413 met to approve a $2000 Southwest 6800 mini computer for student and admin use at Chanute High School. Keith Goering described its classroom programming benefits and admin tasks while Dean Hilton reported 1975 bus costs at 41 cents per mile, 105000 miles total and 29000 gallons of gas, noting maintenance by the district keeps costs down.

Jail break rocks Chanute as inmate escapes jail window

Chanute man James M. Shultz, booked after a family disturbance, pried loose bars from a south window and leaped from the Memorial Building second floor to escape. Police say no charges will be filed. he is to be evaluated at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg.

Farm-city ties focus amid Neosho County talk

Recruitment to be discussed by NCCJC board

Trustees of Neosho County Community Junior College will hear reports of college programs at the November meeting at 8 p.m. today at the college. Homer Beatrick discusses financial aids for students recruitment and plans for student development in November and December. Duane Clum reports on continuing education and college community service activities. The board will consider participation in the Southeast Kansas Cooperative Education Association.

Area forecast calls for clear tonight with lows in the mid 30s. Wednesday will be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 60s and northerly winds around 5 to 10 mph. Precipitation is None.

Bomb scare triggers evacuation at Neosho County Junior College

Chanute fire department and police rushed to NCCJC after a 6:50 p.m. Monday bomb threat case. All campus buildings were evacuated and searched for a potential device but no bomb was located after about an hour. Police chief Chet Hale cited a man claiming a bomb would be set tonight.
