Benny Lookalike Joins Flightline in Kansas City Lounge

In a Mid-Continent Airport lounge, Bill Jenkins and two friends met Joe Rubenstein and Dan Sparks who spotted a man resembling Jack Benny. Benny spoke with them, shook one’s hand, and posed for autographs, though he offered no further demonstration. The encounter was shared with The Tribune.

District to Seek 83000 Federal Education Grant for Program

Unified School District 413 board approved applying for an 83000 Title I grant to fund a special services center. The plan includes a full time librarian, teachers, librarians at multiple schools, remedial instructors, a guidance counselor, a nurse, and a 3400 square foot shell building.

Chanute Guard unit to begin intensified training

Chanute National Guard Company A of the 174th Quartermaster Battalion will start a intensified training program this month. Lt. Col. Donald C. Vosburgh announced the change noting the unit will reach full strength receive equipment and extend training assemblies. The plan requires guardsmen to attend monthly weekend drills with longer sessions, and some hardship to employers. Vacancies exist across the battalion and interested applicants may enlist in the guard with six months active duty before completing their service with the hometown unit.

The United Fund thermometer shows progress with $22,460 raised and $20,000 goal. The drive total stands at $9,121 today as volunteers push to meet the target.

Committee backs 100 by 96 foot shell for new industry

A 12 member chamber study group recommended a steel shell building measuring 100 by 96 feet to attract a new industry. Construction would lack floor, plumbing and wiring but be painted and insulated. Estimated base cost is $22,000, with SBA financing possible after occupancy. Funding likely via Chanute Development Co stock.

Area forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight with partly cloudy skies tomorrow and unseasonably warm weather. Tonight low near 50, Wednesday high in the upper 70s as Topeka reports continued above normal temperatures under clear conditions.

Viet Cong losses and captures in central Viet Nam battles

U S combat troops report 92 Viet Cong killed and 26 captured in three engagements near Plei Me Camp 210 miles north of Saigon. The 1st Air Cavalry and Special Forces fought an enemy force of 500 to 600 men, with 88 enemies killed and 26 captured. 26 suspects also taken. A North Vietnamese element was among those killed and captured. An outpost near Qui Nhon with 101st Airborne Division repelled a Viet Cong attack, killing four. A rescue off Haiphong saved Capt Norman P Huggins after his plane was hit near a SAM site. two U S dive bombers damaged a sampan during the rescue.

McLaren Heads Neosho Realtors

Glenn McLaren was elected president of the Neosho County Board of Realtors at the annual meeting at the Tioga Hotel. Bruce Burris named vice president and Boyd Burns re elected secretary treasurer. Phil Cooper chosen for a three year board term with Robert Allen Gail Maison and Ebur Schultz among other directors. The same officers also serve on the Cha nute Multi List board.

Grass Fire Destroys Hamilton Barn and Damages Garage

Fire destroyed a barn and damaged a corner of a newer garage at Mrs. Wesley Hamilton’s home 312 N Highland. Fire Chief C W Brennan said the loss includes antique belongings not listed. Fireman Howard Schooley cut a finger breaking a window with a hose nozzle to reach fire in the garage. Alarm at about 3 p.m. More grass fires were reported that day.

Plans for hearing on dropping Trains 47 and 48

Hearings on the discontinuance of Santa Fe passenger trains Nos. 47 and 48 are set for November 19 in Chanute in the Memorial building courtroom likely to begin at 9 a.m. E. J. New confirmed the venue is available without charge. Similar hearings will be held in Kansas City on November 22 and in Tulsa on November 17.

The normal conservation pool stands at 1 036 feet above sea level with yesterday's level at 1 036.05 feet. One tainter gate was 2 feet open and one low flow valve fully open. Total water discharge reached 270 cubic feet per second.
