A Halloween weekend saw arson and vandalism across Chanute and neighboring towns. Fires at Erie tied to Halloween pranks, a fatal heart attack followed by a man who battled flames. Damage included a bridge plank burn and scattered property vandalism in Chanute. Sheriff Neely urged prosecutions if evidence allows, citing danger to the public and potential disaster.

Police cited parents of two 15 year old drivers after a collision at Main and Malcolm around 4:25 p m. Barbara J Stipp and Ted J Wheeler were the teens involved. Stipp's father posted a $10 bond. Damages were $250 for the 1959 Plymouth and $75 for the 1955 Ford.
