Drowning at Toronto Lake Claims Neosho County Student
Bob Whyers a 19 year old freshman at Neosho County Community Junior College drowned at Toronto Lake while swimming near an island with friends. Two youths tried to save him but were unsuccessful. Whyers worked at a local grocery and was to return to Alton Illinois. Funeral plans were announced in Alton and a memorial service was set for Friday in Alton and here in town at 2 p.m.

Fifteen people died in Kansas traffic accidents during the Memorial Day weekend from Friday 6 p.m. to Tuesday midnight. The latest deaths were Everett Merryfield of Salina and Marty Angel, 14, of Hutchinson. Merryfield’s car collided with a vehicle pulling a racing car on U.S. 81 near Bennington. his wife Ada was critically injured. Three Chanute residents sustained minor injuries in separate Monday and today crashes. William Bright, 59, was cut when his 1951 Chevrolet was hit from behind at Forest and Sycamore as he turned left. the other driver, 17-year-old George Manly, faced charges for careless driving, defective brakes, and failing to reduce speed. A second collision at Walnut and Highland injured 18-year-old Richard Fisher, and involved a 1962 Dodge and a 1964 International pickup. A third incident left 17-year-old Ben Ennis with hand injuries after his 1966 Volkswagen rolled over on a county road three miles south and east of Chanute.
