The Neosho River rose about six feet after upstream rains, then held at three feet near the low water dam east of the city. Water gushed through a by pass north of the plant for the first time in about two years, scouring moss and algae and improving taste of the city supply.
Neosho County surpasses its cancer fund quota with reports to come. ACS county commander Mrs. Ross Miller reported 3295.33 dollars raised against a 3284.34 target. A Topeka letter from Kansas ACS director Miles Pulford praised local dressings output. Neosho leads in dressings sent to Topeka, about 825 dozen weekly for three weeks.
In Topeka a pair of 7 and 8 year old brothers confessed to stealing about 1200 dollars from a cafe and to three other thefts. They admitted taking 500 dollars from a downtown drug store and 50 dollars from two service stations. Officer Don Laird said their stories align with known facts and may not be complete. Police recovered 582 dollars. One 18 year old, LaVerne Caskey, is named as an accomplice and held on a loitering charge.
President Eisenhower accepted an invitation to attend a meeting of presidents of American nations in Panama City on June 25 26. The trip would mark a high level regional gathering with leaders from multiple countries expected to attend.
The second annual Chanute Aviation Day at Municipal Airport features a free breakfast for visiting pilots, pilot skill contests, and a public ground display of new aircraft. Chanute city commissioners announced a gift of easements from Mr and Mrs Gordon Barker to permit a low water dam on the Barker farm near Chanute and the right to raise river levels above the dam. City officials praised the Barker family and noted the dam would secure a six month water supply during droughts.
Mahlon Morley announces a Dairy Princess Contest in Neosho County as part of June Dairy Month. Eligible entrants are single women aged 16 to 25 with farm backgrounds who are high school graduates and county residents. Deadline is June 10 with a banquet set for June 16 in Chanute and a district winner to Parsons on June 23 before state and national competitions.
A Topeka alarm sent city residents scrambling as sirens wailed at 10 05 p m signaling two tornado funnels 150 miles southwest. Citizens sought shelter while police and media tracked the storm which veered away with no major damage.
Weather forecast notes partly cloudy skies tonight and Saturday with a chance of scattered thundershowers this evening. A new May 11 temperature record may be set at 85 degrees by 12:30 PM, with storms yesterday bringing heavy rain and damaging winds in several areas across Kansas and Nebraska.
Chanute high school senior Judy J. Jordan won the Ottawa University Citizenship Scholarship for 1956 57, a $1000 award among 18 scholarships. City leaders from Parsons Coffeyville and Cherryvale and Corps of Engineers members at Tulsa toured the proposed Big Hill Creek dam site. A public hearing was set for June 14. The lake would lie six miles west of Parsons or 2 1/2 miles east of Cherryvale and serve Cherryvale Coffeyville Parsons Mound Valley Liberty Altamont with flood control and recreation benefits.

Later Mrs Margaret Moore backed from East Main and Don Farmer backed from an adjacent lot a collision damaged a door on Moore s car. the truck sustained no damage.
