Police report a 1949 Cadillac left abandoned near the Country Club at 2 45 am. A wet burlap bag of about 180 golf balls and wet trousers were recovered. A Kansas City man claimed the balls, saying they came from a lake near Wichita. Local golfers joke about Chanute balls and a possible transfer to Wichita.
Corps of Engineers representatives from Tulsa meet with local development group in Cherryvale to study the Big Hill Creek project. An inspection is planned and a public hearing date will be set. The plan includes a dam to create a recreational area and augment water supply with partnership funding by Coffeyville Derryvale and Parsons. A feasibility study by Army engineers will follow.
A Kansas weather update reports record heat with 90s and a 101 high in Liberal. Topeka forecasts cooler nights in the 50s to 70s and 70s/80s by Friday. Separate briefing notes pressure expansion of defense work in southeast Kansas including Parsons Ordnance Plant and Coffeyville subcontracts, plus possible Air Force base reactivation. Fred Roles of 1320 N. Santa Fe was sentenced to six months in county jail after pleading guilty in city court to illegally selling whiskey. Police said agents from the Kansas Alcohol Beverage Control office filed the complaint at Opera, citing two sales to an agent. Judge Robert Pennington presided at the hearing.
At Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan two buildings were struck and a firefighter was burned when 24 rockets accidentally fired from a Sabre Jet rocket pod while unloading. Rockets damaged a home east of Mount Clemens and the base salvage yard. Unexploded missiles prompted a two mile police seal and removal by Air Force personnel.
Berlin reports accuse Eleanor Dulles, using her maiden name, of masterminding a so called spy tunnel to tap Red telephone lines. Eleanor Dulles is a special assistant in the State Department's German affairs office.
Two of the Dallas quadruplets born last week are alive in Dallas hospitals. A second baby, Marilyn Kay Hunter weighing 2 pounds 11 ounces at birth on April 30, died last night. Her sister Melanie Faye died Tuesday. Doctors cite cerebral conditions common to premature infants. The remaining two sisters survive in incubators.
A sewer line ditch cave-in in Wichita yesterday injured two men. Walter Bradshaw aged 42 suffered fractured ribs a fractured vertebrae a possible ruptured spleen and other internal injuries. Henry Poindexter aged 31 received bruises while working with Bradshaw in the eight foot ditch when the sides collapsed.
Wichita event features a public display of the B52 Stratofortress at McConnell Air Force Base. An Air National Guard unit will also fly F80 jets as part of the day’s program.

Sightings of six objects over six nights near Pueblo Colorado were reported to the 4602nd Air Intelligence Service Squadron at Peterson Field. Sgt Gilbert Nelson observed brief fast glows, mostly triangular shapes with one brighter round object, all visible only five to six seconds. The Air Force sent another team to Pueblo but provided no findings.
Associate Professor Donald A. Glaser describes a xenon bubble chamber that uses liquid xenon to image fast gamma rays and neutrons. Project aims to visualize nuclear events by recording bubble tracks when particles strike xenon atoms and converting data into speeds directions and energies.
Floyd E. Smith filed an alienation of affection suit in district court seeking 16000 against Dean Tennis. Smith, a Humboldt welder residing at 1315 S Central Chanute, alleges Tennis alienated the affections of Smiths wife. The couple married March 5 1948 and have two sons aged six and two. Divorce proceedings against Smiths wife were filed the same day as the alienation suit. The earlier Chanute divorce action was dismissed.
Brig. Gen. W. E. Potter of the Army Engineers criticized Kansas and Missouri for slow progress in the Missouri Basin development program. He warned the lower basin risks flood damage like 1951 and called for early Grand River authorization and stronger downstream flood control. The Missouri Basin Inter-Agency Committee includes 10 governors and seven federal agencies.

The 13th traffic death of 1956 occurred when Spencer Lee English, 25, tried to flee police in a high speed chase. His car sped up to 100 mph, lost control, overturned, and struck a utility pole, killing English outright.
