Six Trapped As Vessel Sinks In Gulf Storm
A 92 foot brigantine Albatross sank during a violent Gulf of Mexico storm trapping six below decks. The vessel owned by Ocean Academy carried 19 aboard including 14 youths two professors a cook a chaperone and Captain Christopher Sheldon. Thirteen survivors were rescued by the Dutch freighter Gran Rio and were en route to Tampa. The sinking occurred about 180 miles northwest of Key West as lifeboats were torn away in the squall. The captain lists Mystic as home port and the ship had been on a Mawing cruise prior to the disaster.

A seven month old boy Robert Dale Wilson died after a one car accident near Chetopa. The car driven by Joe Pat Wilson of Chetopa struck a bridge railing and went into a ditch, injuring the infant and sparing another child from serious harm. Highway patrolman Gene Star reported the incident.
