Chanute School Board approves a district wide textbook rental system for Chanute Senior High for 1961 62 at 8 50 per student per year with credits for underclassmen and cash for seniors. The plan includes state reimbursement 5000 setup cost and a 1000 book fund, with five new teachers approved and several resignations accepted.
Left eda me iy Hand Pitch Rolen Casebolt editor of The Student Monitor at Chanute Senior High School shared top honors in a statewide sports writing contest. Wayne Douglass of Wichita East tied for first. Casebolt’s piece appeared in The Tribune and recounted a Pittsburg regional game where Blue Comets beat Independence on Jim Gough’s final free throws. The 41st annual contest drew 573 entries from 57 schools across 15 categories according to Associated Press reporting.
Washington AP report shows unemployment falling 533000 in April to 4962000 while employment rises 218000 to 65734000. Labor force shrank 315000, and farm jobs barely rose due to wet conditions, with advisers evaluating policies to boost demand and curb unemployment.

Floyd Webb of 708 N Grant suffered slight burns to a hand and neck when a glass coffee maker exploded while he made coffee yesterday at his home. Webb said the upper bowl was half full when it exploded, showering coffee and glass across the kitchen. the bottom bowl remained unbroken.
Fire Chief C. W. Brennan issued the April summary showing about 2200 dollars in fire losses for April, bringing the year to May 1 to about 7450 dollars. There were 18 runs last month and 73 alarms in the first four months, with several grass fires and township calls including Tioga and Danville townships.

The day includes yard work babysitting house cleaning and assorted odd jobs.
The VFW post will join the national organization in observing Youth Welfare Day as part of VFW Week. Howard Carder, commander, said the effort highlights youth activities such as Scout units marble tournaments rifle clubs bowling leagues and teener baseball. The local post has been active in organizing and supporting youth baseball.
