Traffic crashes blamed on heavy rains across area
Torrential rains blamed for at least three traffic accidents in the area. A 1961 Ford, driven by Jack Blair of Independence, ran off a washed out bridge near Earlton. his family suffered minor facial injuries. Another collision on US 169 south of here involved Ronald Boyle and Angie Delatorre with no injuries. A third wreck near Chanute damaged a car and involved Ernie Griggs, all amid ongoing flood concerns and a chilly forecast through Tuesday.

Four teenage Walnut girls were killed and five others injured in a two car and truck collision on highway K357 near the Crawford County line. Victims were Marilyn McClung Kathleen McClung Ruth Carroll Carla Carroll. injuries include James Archer and family in the other car, all taken to Girard. The crash followed an attempted pass in light rain on open road near St Paul.

Two Missing Girls Bodies Found in Holland Ravine
In Holland Michigan two missing girls aged 11 and 12 were found shot dead in a wooded ravine near their home. Authorities pursued 16 year old James Scott Stephens on murder charges as the search and stakeout continued with over 500 police and volunteers.

Car Damage In Mishaps Near Walnut and Grant
A 1959 Chevrolet driven by Charles W. Solomon received $50 damage in an intersection collision at Walnut and Grant about 10 am. The other car, a 1953 Plymouth driven by Bruce Eaton, had no damage. Eaton was cited for failing to observe a stop sign. Two additional accidents involved parked cars over the weekend. Ernest Hurford reported his wife scraped an unidentified car leaving a church on Third, damaging its door. A 1938 Plymouth owned by Tommy Slater was sideswiped while parked on Wilson.

A division meeting of the state Highway Development Council was held to plan Kansas Highway Week. James F. Cooper led the Chamber of Commerce highway committee with council reps and fourth division highway officials over lunch at the Tioga Hotel. Additional chamber events this week include a directors meeting at 7 30 tonight and an Ambassadors Club lunch Wednesday at the Kay Hotel.
