In Dorrance Kansas a car and a school bus collided at a rural intersection killing two women from Bunker Hill Ida McWhirt 59 and Anna Patrick 65. Six others were hospitalized including the bus driver 24 year old Duane Nichols and four Dorance School children.
A National Safety Council report shows 2700 traffic deaths in March, up 14 percent from March 1960. For January through March 1961 the toll reached 7730, up 1 percent from the same period a year earlier. About 500 spectators watched the Senior High drum and bugle corps in the fifth annual Drum Corps on Parade show in the school gym. The program titled A Century in Music had three parts Stars and Stripes Forever We’re From Kansas and Drum and Bugle Glory. The Royster Junior High corps performed between the second and third parts. The act marked the year’s climax with 19 public appearances including Topeka Girard Emporia Independence Erie Iola Joplin Bartlesville Wichita and Chanute with Centennial parade at Topeka May 20 still ahead.
AP reports rising temperatures across Kansas. Forecasters expect highs around 70 today and Sunday with mid 70s possible in places. Clouds may bring showers in the northeast, while lows range from the upper 30s to mid 50s across towns like Salina and Chanute.
