Hal B. Scott, a farmer and bus driver, found a chicken under the hood of the Oakhill school bus while waiting for students last week. A fresh egg, a broken egg, and singed feathers were found among the engine wiring, indicating the hen laid there during the bus’s idle period at Scott’s farm.
Secretary Rogers Morton announced the appointment of Wilma L. Victor a 51 year old Choctaw educator with 26 years in the Bureau of Indian Affairs as special assistant for Indian Affairs. Morton said she would broaden contact with Indian leadership across the spectrum.
The Supreme Court upheld by five to four that states may restrict what an illegitimate child may inherit from his natural parents, a decision the minority labeled as invidious discrimination. Justice Hugo L. Black delivered the majority ruling endorsing state power to regulate family life and property disposition.
A Texaco tanker broke in two in heavy Atlantic seas 120 miles northeast of Cape Hatteras. Thirty three of its 44 crew members were missing as a Coast Guard search continued after eleven survivors were rescued from a life raft by a passing freighter headed to New York. Most missing crewmen hailed from Port Arthur Texas. The vessel was carrying 220000 barrels of oil.
In Berkeley Missouri a sniper fired on three vehicles early Sunday prompting a five hour closure of Interstate 70 near Lambert-St Louis Airport. No injuries were reported.
An intense fire at the 117 year old Canandaigua Inn in New York left at least three dead and seven missing with 14 hospitalized. Firefighters recovered two charred bodies from the rubble and a man who fled the blaze died of a heart attack. Stanley Rypka, a former VA patient, collapsed at the scene and died later at the hospital.
Tom L. Schwinn of the Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association says a gas severance tax would hike utility costs for all Kansans. He argues higher fuel costs would hit electrical generators and residents, with Kansas consumers bearing a large share of the tax burden.
A five story 163 bed Mount Carmel Medical Center was formally dedicated in Pittsburg Kansas. Gov. Robert Docking and Bishop David Maloney joined Sister Joachim and Rep. Joe Skubitz for the ceremony. The $7 million facility replaces the old Mount Carmel Hospital in the north part of the city.
Ricky Dean Smith 2 of Altoona was killed and Glenn Rettman 18 injured in a motorcycle collision on US 75 at 5th Street intersection. Smith died instantly from a skull fracture. Rettman was treated for a bruised leg and elbow cut. Both wore helmets. investigation by Trooper Keith Dillon found no speed involvement. Smith, a Kansas State College of Pittsburg student, leaves parents Vern Smith in Neiva Colombia and Mary Ann Waggoner of Altoona, with funeral set at Altoona Christian Church.
Milton Shaw of the Atomic Energy Commission says the AEC struggles to win authorization for a Lyons Kansas waste repository because public relations needed more attention. Shaw and others testified before a Topeka legislative committee weighing a resolution opposing the site.
Mitchell Mosely of Parsons reported to Chanute police at 4 12 p m Saturday that his yellow 1961 four door Chevrolet was stolen from in front of 812 N Santa Fe. The car carried tag LBM 551 and had been taken about 30 minutes before the call. Parsons police and Kansas Highway Patrol were notified.

Neosho County faces targeted reductions in farm land assessments as the Kansas Property Valuation Department orders cuts to bottom land and certain grasslands while some categories see increases. The changes aim for county equalization across the state, with several thousand rural parcels affected and no overall total yet known.
Salina Kansas resident Irv Ricklefs, a retired parks superintendent, paid 150 from his own funds to plant seven pin oaks 6 to 7 feet tall in Oakdale and Sunset Parks. He fears future generations will lack great trees if elm disease slows replacement.

Oren Johnson Allan Shepard and Marty Barnhart also bonded. police reported a loud party at 1126 S Highland leading to a fight and broken bottles.
Saigon reports 33 Americans dead and 76 wounded in a one hour strike by North Vietnamese sappers at a U.S. base south of Da Nang. The toll is described as possibly the war’s largest single attack.
A one story frame building housing Resnick's Appliance Center burned today in El Dorado Kansas. The blaze started about 8 56 a m and the structure was destroyed. No injuries were reported. Fire crews from the area fought the flames. Local authorities investigated the cause of the fire.
Police received four calls reporting prowlers Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Three reports came from South Lafayette Street blocks and one from South Highland. In one call at 4 a.m. Sunday a caller heard sounds of breaking in. Officers found no one in the area each time.
Oscar Cunningham, president of Mid-America Refining Co., was elected chairman of the board of the American Petroleum Refiners Association at its March 20 meeting in San Francisco. He will serve a one year term. APRA has nationwide membership and headquarters in Washington. It represents small refineries with capacity of 10,000 barrels or less per day.
Judge Reid Kennedy said he will decide Tuesday whether to question Lt. William Calley's murder trial jury about possible help in deliberations. The jury entered its 13th day with no verdict in sight, while defense counsel protested delays and questioned the impact on the accused.
Members and friends gathered at New Hope Baptist Church for the 90th anniversary celebration. A 3 p.m. service featured Rev. W M Murray, the Calvary Baptist Church choir from Coffeyville, deacons, and a message by Mr. Murray. A 1 30 p.m. turkey dinner followed in the dining room with attendees from several cities including Fort Scott Parsons Kansas City Omaha Tucson Wichita Fredonia Iola Humboldt Independence and Coffeyville.
A pink bunny stuffed rabbit was stolen from the Derby Service Station at 1111 N. Santa Fe. The item was to be awarded April 10 to the customer whose card was drawn. John Hanna, an employee, reported the theft to police at 2 a.m. Sunday and said no one was seen near the station.
New York AP reports the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Notre Dame star Aus tin Carr as the top pick in the NBA college draft. Portland followed by drafting Sidney Wicks from UCLA and expansion Buffalo chose 7-foot Elmore Smith from Kentucky, completing the first round selections.

The Kansas Legislature approved a bill ratifying the Kansas Nebraska Blue River compact signed January 25 by state and federal representatives. The measure seeks equitable water apportionment and pollution abatement within the Blue River basin draining parts of Kansas and Nebraska. The House also sent to the governor a bill extending an interstate oil compact and approved a Graham County low cost housing funds bill while killing a nonresident hunting license increase. A Leavenworth city court name change bill also goes back to the Senate.
