Frank Rasmussen, 35, lay trapped as 18 sticks of dynamite misfired in a Death Valley tunnel. His partner Harry Boyer pulled him free after multiple blasts, then carried him to Skidoo for medical care with a broken leg and back injuries.
Dan C. Cain, Shawnee County Democratic chairman, resigns as state director of probation and parole effective May 1. He cites political backlash from legislative leaders who sought to use parole administration for political gain. Gov. Docking earlier vetoed a bill raising the director’s qualifications. Cain plans to avoid politics entering probation and parole while continuing party efforts in Kansas.
President Eisenhower Prime Minister Macmillan and President de Gaulle reached conditional agreement to a summit with Khrushchev over Berlin and other issues. The United States set a goal of a ministers meeting first to narrow gaps, while Britain urged a summit as soon as ministers' talks justify it and France pressed stricter conditions.
Gov. George Docking warned that loss of federal funds over civil service disputes would trigger a special state session to create a civil service board. He criticized the Finance Council and noted opposition from Republican leaders Wunsch and Lauterbach as contributing to inaction and potential federal jeopardy.
Arthur Kronberg 42 of Menasha Wisconsin died after a wind toppled him from a grain elevator in Galatia 20 miles northwest of Great Bend Kansas. He worked for Johnson Elevator Construction Co. The accident occurred yesterday.
The 1954 Dodge station wagon stolen Tuesday from 309 W. 6th was recovered at Hughes Arkansas. Arrested was Harvey Standlee, 29, who escaped from a state prison farm at Lansing Monday while the car theft case here will be referred to the FBI for federal prosecution. He was nabbed while trying to pass bogus checks in Hughes.
A city primary canvass adjusted two vote tallies without changing winners. Walter Poor gained five votes in ward one raising his board of education total to 667 while Lee Judy’s third ward tally increased by one for an official total of 317. City Clerk Howard Parsons and Commissioner Harold R Williams conducted the review.
Pittsburg man Fred W. Mitchell, 41, is held on cattle theft charges in Crawford County. He admitted taking two cows from Ray Sweet farm near Walnut and Bad End farm near St. Paul, selling them near Girard for 140 dollars and 100 dollars plus a calf. Mitchell faces additional Crawford County charges. Sheriff Hobart Ahrens arrested him.
Rain measuring 1.08 inches drenched Chanute helping soil moisture while farmers brace for cooler weather and another possible front this weekend. Local officials report over 40 grass-fire runs this month as Chester countywide drought eases.
Wind last night damaged the Robert Weitzel farm five miles northwest of Parsons in Neosho County. Sheriff Jerry Sloan said the outbuilding and house were hit about 9 o’clock. The Weitzels, unharmed, reported the house moved inches, shingles stripped, windows blown out, plaster cracked, and trees uprooted. They tried to reach the cellar during the storm.

An unsuccessful break into Henry Smith Highway Supply Store occurred Tuesday night at the US 59 and K57 junction. a glass was broken but the lock held.
A three year old dies after eating poisoned fish in Philadelphia area prompting a regional alert. Federal inspectors confirm the tainted fish was confined to a small Philadelphia distributor’s stock and pulled from sale. The Donald Kleinschmidt family from Haddon Heights and others fell ill. all market fish now deemed safe.
Tioga township exceeded its Red Cross quota, raising 267.22 toward a 230 goal under William G. Bodley of the Neosho County chapter. Local workers led by Mrs. Ernest Kepley and a committee list contributed to the county total of 2,451 against a 9,894 goal.

Topeka reports Kansas road deaths in the latest 24 hours show zero new fatalities. The year to date total stands at 101, compared with 90 at the same point in 1958.
The Air Force told Senator Schoeppel it will complete in the next few days the land purchase for nine missile launching pads near Forbes Air Force Base at Topeka. The original target date for completing the acquisition was April 15.
City ordinance requires all dogs be penned or tethered with fines from five to one hundred dollars. Police Department adv. 289-71.
A 10,000 gallon water tank atop a six story loft at 147 West 26th Street collapsed through the roof injuring at least seven people seriously. Fire and police units, hampered by street congestion, searched the wreckage as water cascaded through the building in the millinery garment district near the flower market.
Kansas City AP report says Gerald Wayne Lee, 2, fell from a third story window onto a concrete sidewalk. He suffered only lip and chin cuts and was released from the hospital after several hours of observation.
State and local officers raided a plush gambling parlor in Piermont seizing 45 well heeled men. Some played cards, others lounged as steaks and salads were served. Wads of over $2,000 were found. Rolls Royce among the cars outside.
In Mesquite Texas a white Leghorn hen took over raising Blackie's five kittens. Blackie, the mother cat, slips back to feed them while other hens peck at the youngsters. Owner Mrs. Alton Terry says the hen is doing a good job and the kittens respond to the clucking.
