In Portland Oregon Dave Sessions twenty year old bus driver faced six fire trucks and flashing lights after his school bus collided with and damaged a fire alarm box. Sessions admitted the mirror struck the box as he parked prompting the emergency response.
Egyptian antiaircraft guns opened fire on two Israeli Phantom jets over Port Fuad near the Suez Canal marking the first incident since the cease-fire began last summer. No hits were reported as the planes intruded over Egyptian positions. The cease-fire ended March 7. Dedication of the Arkansas River navigation system moved to June 7 with President Nixon invited. June 5 is Tricia Nixon Cox's wedding day.
Washington AP reports FBI appears close to identifying those behind the Capitol bombing. A source says progress is positive but cautions arrests are not confirmed and information gathering continues. In Japan, riot police removed farmers blocking access to a Marine firing range as 150 howitzer shells were fired over three days of practice.
Area forecast calls for fair weather through Saturday with northwest winds 20 to 35 mph diminishing tonight. Colder tonight and warmer Saturday with lows in the lower 20s and highs in the upper 50s. Severe wind from Thursday caused downed power lines, fallen limbs, and damaged property across Urbana, Buffalo, Chanute, and surrounding areas.
Fire on Katy Railroad property near the east edge of town was contained to about ten square feet after smoke and wind damaged nearby restaurant signs. Wide areas of Kansas endured hurricane like winds from a late winter storm spread from Nebraska and Iowa. Gusts reached 115 mph at Hays with 97 mph reported by the National Weather Service. Snow to about three inches fell in a broad area, while power outages and debris disrupted traffic and daily life including a 20 minute delay to the Junior College Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson.
The final showing for the art exhibit at Neosho County Community Junior College Library runs Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Sponsored by Neosho Valley Arts Council the show features Julia Cohn and the late Leslie Fliegel. The Kansas Federation of Art and Old Bergen Art Guild cooperate with the exhibit.
