Woman Sentenced To 90 Days In Jail For Dwi Incident
Mrs. Gladys Willmes 31 of 420 N Santa Fe pleaded guilty in city court to driving while intoxicated and with a suspended license and was sentenced to 90 days in the county jail plus a $100 fine and costs. A Highway Patrol investigation cited a collision on US 59 near Katy railroad crossing injuring Henry Franklin Moore 24 of 705 N Lafayette. Willmes suffered a lip cut. Moore incurred a minor leg injury as the two vehicles a 1955 DeSoto and a 1946 Chevrolet sustained heavy damage at the front and rear respectively.

Crazed ex-convict kidnaps mother and three children
Richard Arlen Payne, 23, abducted a mother and three children at gunpoint in Charleston West Virginia. He bound the family, demanded the governor free a fellow convict Junior Star cher to avert killing them, and left the father bound and later freed to notify authorities as state troopers and helicopters scoured southern West Virginia. Payne, released last week from Moundsville prison, had served seven years for armed robbery.

Tragedy as Train Hits Car Carrying Girl Scouts
Xenia Ohio shows a freight train striking a car carrying 10 passengers in a crossroad crash. Eight Girl Scouts among the 10 dead, ages mostly 11 or 12, with two adult women victims. Driver Lucille White 44 and passenger Jeanette Randall 39 among the deceased. Kenneth Ward, parent and auxiliary fireman, found his daughter Linda Ward 12 among the bodies. The girls had been studying for merit badges at a local library before the trip home to Beavercreek Township.

House GOP Moves To Amend Unemployment Benefit Bill
The Kansas House passed an amended unemployment compensation proposal 94 to 8 sending it back to the Senate. Republicans push changes including a three man board for appeals opposed by labor who say central hearings add cost. The measure would lift unemployment duration from 20 to 26 weeks and weekly benefits from 34 to about 40 funded by employer payroll taxes. The House also tentatively approved a separate bill to raise salaries by about 151000 annually effective 1961.

Sales Barn Burns At Valley Falls
A wind driven fire destroyed McCloud Packing company’s community sales barn and slaughter plant in Valley Falls Kansas. Firefighters battled reducing wind and saved the home of Mr and Mrs Roy McCloud across the street. Loss estimate not yet available.
