A bright fireball exploded about 8:30 a.m. east of Chanute near the Lyman L. Smith home three miles east and half a mile south. Some think it was lightning while others saw it as a meteor’s disintegration with a reported 50 foot altitude and a nearby listener left dazed by the blast.
Congress sent to President Eisenhower a 33 million dollar highway construction bill paving the way for what would be the largest public works program in U S history.
Army takes control in Guatemala City after four students are killed and 17 wounded during demonstrations against a government crackdown on Communist activity. The government imposes a state of siege, orders news censorship, and calls for civilian cooperation to avoid further clashes.
A powerful squall line swept Kansas last night bringing strong winds and blowing dust that reduced visibility to zero in places and halted highway traffic. Two tornado funnels were sighted, with hail and heavy rain reported in several counties while Marysville led precipitation. cooler air followed as scattered storms are possible later.
Kansas traffic fatalities reported by the State Accident Records Section show 3 new deaths in the last 24 hours and 292 for the year to date in 1956, compared with 263 for the same period in 1955.

Two Kansas State Industrial Reformatory convicts escaped yesterday in a PK marked pickup with KSIR on the door. Ronald K. Allen, 22, and Larry Joe Johnson, 17, were on a trash hauling detail outside the walls. Allen was received from McPherson on Sept 6, 1955 for assault with intent to kill and Johnson from Norton in February for grand larceny.
Kansas City reports Meridian Mississippi wins sweepstakes award in public improvement in under 50 000 population category over Detroit Salisbury and Ritzville in other classes. Jaycees name first second and third in 28 categories with Minnesota Arkansas and Connecticut top state projects. Billy Graham headlines the awards luncheon with 9000 delegates attending.
A United States Air Force B47 bomber from Smoky Hill Air Force Base crashed in a Salina wheat field early today, killing three crewmen: Capt. Robert A. Galvan, 35, of San Antonio Texas. 1st Lt. Charles W. Ward, 25, of Pacoima California. and Capt. Bruce C. Harris, 40, of Horton Michigan and McPherson Kansas. The plane exploded in the air or on impact after contact with the tower four minutes before the crash. Wreckage spread over a mile and a fire burned several acres. a base board of inquiry will investigate the cause. Eyewitnesses reported a ball of fire and a sky reddened by the blast as wind shifted to the north ahead of a storm front.
One forest fire near Salida was growing out of control despite winds. The San Isabel National Forest fire along Middle Creek on Taylor Mountain above Garfield had burned over 175 acres. Sheriff Emmett Showalter reported. Over 100 volunteers and Camp Hale soldiers worked to form a containment line. Meanwhile about 150 firefighters kept watch on a separate blaze southwest of Idaho Springs that consumed more than 1,000 acres of timber.
In Humboldt, thieves pried open a window at Don's Service Station and escaped with about $16.45. Don Endsley discovered the theft at 7:30 a.m. Police Chief Bill Feeney, Henry Mueller, and Allen County officers conducted the investigation. Cottage Grove Ladies Aid will meet with Mrs. Max Watts Thursday afternoon.
Nineteen of twenty one Republican governors signed a petition urging Dwight D. Eisenhower’s renomination and re election. Gov. Fred Hall of Kansas circulated the document at the 48th Annual Governors Conference in Atlantic City. The Associated Press survey at the same meeting indicated Adlai Stevenson could secure about 400 nomination votes, jeopardizing the nominating process.
Progress reports on the Southeast Kansas tuberculosis hospital push toward an earlier opening than the tentative September 16 date. Painting and electrical work proceed as staffing plans grow to 70 full time and three half-time workers with July and August hires, including director of nurses Charlotte Greer and x ray technician George Gallagher.
General Nathan Twining and allied officers toured Kubinka and Zhukovski in a controlled Kremlin flight tour. Soviet officials showcased a claimed twin engine light attack bomber said to exceed sound speed. Twining praised Soviet piloting while noting restricted access and guarded demonstrations.
In Richland Kansas a cafe operator, Fred Heberling, about 50, was killed by a sheriff's deputy and a cafe customer during a gun battle after Heberling resisted an arrest over a divorce restraining order. Deputy Landis and bystander Noble Lathrom were lightly wounded. Heberling's death ends the confrontation at the cafe. The nearby Georgia Neese Clark Gray bark and store, once robbed, sits with related family violence in the town.
Robert L. Phillips of Chanute faced a hearing on intoxication disturbing the peace and malicious destruction of property after entering the C. B. Wilson residence at 611 S. Grant. Police say he damaged furnishings, upturned a dining set, turned on gas burners, spilled grape juice, emptied a coffee pot, and scattered living room furniture. The hearing occurred in police court this afternoon.
Seven Scouts from Kansas Missouri compete for a U S Antarctic expedition with Adm Richard Byrd. Finalists include Stewart Gillmor Jr 17 of Kansas City Keith E Goering 17 Neodesha Kas and Jere Jon Hodshire 18 Prairie Village Kas. One Scout will be chosen to sail in November as part of the International Geophysical Year 1957 58.
President Eisenhower’s doctors expect weight gain soon as he remains at 162 pounds, seven pounds below his June 8 hospitalization. An 8:20 a.m. bulletin said he slept nine hours, is not losing weight, and is on a plateau awaiting gradual gain. He hopes for discharge Friday or Saturday and plans to spend his 40th wedding anniversary in Gettysburg with Mrs. Eisenhower.
Mrs. Frank M. Grizzell, 71, of Claflin Kansas, died in a one car crash near Downs. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband. The car left the road on a soft shoulder and overturned. The extent of injuries to the driver was not known.
Humboldt resident J. C. Muecke, 77, was seriously injured Saturday afternoon when a sharp clippers blade pierced his left facial area while trimming evergreens. X rays show multiple facial fractures, with possible loss of sight in the left eye. he remains hospitalized in shock after significant blood loss.
