Livestock Truck Flips Near Chanute No Injuries Reported
A livestock transport rolled onto its side after a collision with a pickup on a country road six miles east and two miles north of Chanute at about 10 15 a.m. Occupants of the cab and eleven cattle were uninjured. Sheriff Lee Montgomery investigated and identified drivers Hubert Smith and Joe Vincent of Stark and Forrest Stephens of Chanute.

Clyde Webb of California was found guilty by a district court jury of endangering the life of his former wife Verda Rush. He fired at her at her rural Erie area home last May 24 and was convicted on the lesser charge of assault with intent to kill. Sentence deferred. hearing set for July 11 with potential six months to five years. County attorney Forsyth asked for doubled punishment based on prior felony.

A large steel storage tank at the Neo sho Fertilizer Inc plant southwest of Chanute caught fire this afternoon. Firefighters guarded against spread while the tank containing several hundred gallons of liquid nitrogen burned. the blaze began when a welder's torch sparked. No injuries were reported.
