Bill Shepherd reports a 23 acre wheat field on the A. L. Burns property three miles west and three miles south of Chanute produced 1,180 bushels with a 40 pound runover. Including the runover the yield is 51.21 bushels per acre.
Lynn F Morse a farmer stockman with four years as Wilson County commissioner and 12 years on Guilford Township board joins a three man race for the Republican nomination for state representative from Wilson County He and his wife live southeast of Benedict on 320 acres homesteaded by his family since 1869 Morse born on the farm sixty two years ago says he wants to serve the agricultural area and pursue industrial development He is currently Guilford Township trustee and a Farm Bureau member.
Delphos B. Burns 38, once a mental patient, surrendered with his attorney to face a first degree murder charge in his wife Ruby Burns 36 death at a motel cabin in Syracuse Kansas. He had been sought in five states after the body was found last Sunday. His parents had urged him to surrender in an open letter. Burns was released from a state hospital in April and has lived in Wichita after previous residences in Waco and Houston.
Coroner Sam Smith said Norma Youngblood 33 died from accidental strangulation linked to intoxication. The coroner's jury cleared her common law husband Avery Owen 33 and three others. Owen faces public intoxication charges while others pleaded guilty and received 10 days in jail.
At the Osage County cattlemen’s convention in Pawhuska J B Smith warned of disaster in two weeks without rain as 1300 cattlemen gathered. Rain began hours after the talk. Attendees included Fred G Drum mond and Edward Kennedy who recently toured Russia. Kennedy noted Russians appeared content with their lot. Kennedy said revolts by Russians are unlikely.
The Arkansas White Red Inter-agency Committee continues its bi state study of water problems for eight states and will meet in Colorado Springs on July 12 13. Directors and governors from Louisiana Arkansas Missouri Texas Oklahoma Kansas Colorado New Mexico attend with federal agency heads and state representatives.
Washington Governor Arthur Langlie was picked to deliver the keynote at the GOP convention in San Francisco starting August 20. Senate leader Knowland and Rep. Martin were named leaders, with Prescott Bush chaired the platform committee. National Chairman Hall predicted Eisenhower and Nixon will headline the ticket, with no indication of a fight over Nixon. The group weighed three versus four days for the convention.
President Eisenhower's doctors said he was out of bed for 90 minutes last night the longest since his operation two weeks ago. An 8 a.m. Walter Reed bulletin reported progress very satisfactorily and the president in good spirits after nearly eight hours of sleep.
Hutchinson Farmers affected by drought or wind erosion may qualify for 1956 soil bank payments. Eligible growers receive 6 dollars per acre for crop losses and 4 dollars per acre for underplanting. Applications must be filed by July 20 with a short absentee signature window. Under contract, land use is restricted from June 22 to December 31, 1956, with cover crops allowed and some grazing restrictions noted.
Authorities faced a widening blaze of about 20 000 acres near Beardmore Ontario with Leitch Village in its path. The Ontario Land and Forest Department ordered an emergency train at Beardmore station to evacuate residents if needed.
Mr and Mrs Foyle Christy of rural Concordia were killed when their pickup collided with a car four miles east of here. Robert Sheets 19 of Glasgow Kansas, driver of the car, was not seriously injured.
An empty motor carrier collided with a Kansas City freight train north of Chanute on US 169, blocking the highway about an hour. Driver John V Thompson, treated for minor bruises and cited for failing to yield, said the train siren and wig wag signal were working. no other injuries reported.
Nevada delegates to the National Junior Chamber of Commerce Convention plan to throw 10,000 silver dollars in the parade of states next Wednesday as the convention opens in Kansas City. Florida will toss grapefruit.
In Louisville an 18 year old airline employee, Donald Farmer, slept atop a gasoline truck while drawing fuel. The tank overflowed, spilling about 3 000 gallons before an alarm woke him. Firefighters spent three hours washing away the gasoline with no immediate estimate of losses.
Mr and Mrs James M Watson celebrate 70 years of marriage in Woodstock Ontario. The couple aged 96 and 94 received congratulations from Queen Elizabeth II Canadian officials and Mayor Bernadette Smith.
Cool air moving eastward from the Rockies eased heat in the midcontinent while the West and northern Plains saw a warming trend. Temperatures fell 10 to 15 degrees with lower humidity, but readings climbed to 100 plus in the Southern Plains and near Presidio, Texas. Storms and a tornado injure three near Big Spring, Texas, while lightning strikes oil tanks near Midland. An hour long cloudburst isolates Harlansburg, Pennsylvania, with no injuries reported.
Severe thunderstorm with 75 mph winds hit Coffeyville causing outages in the east section. Roofs were blown from buildings at Continental Can Co and a chemical plant. over two inches of rain fell quickly. Workers at the can plant skipped weekend shifts due to damage.
Admiral Arthur Radford told the joint conference of defense secretaries at Quantico that defense is not the monopoly of any one service. He stressed mobility involves bases fuel and supply lines, and noted lingering issues among Army Air Force and Navy in guided missile development and usage.

A bolt struck elm trees near 303 N Grant injuring near by residents. lightning damaged a heater and a second floor unit. Forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, cooler air, and possible storms through Sunday.
The 1956 winter wheat crop, damaged by wind and drought, pours into elevators as combines harvest across Kansas Colorado Nebraska Oklahoma New Mexico Missouri and Texas. Kansas and Oklahoma expect strong yields, with Kansas around 140 million bushels. Colorado reports the smallest crop in 16 years, while Nebraska and New Mexico face smaller outputs due to dry spells. Production nationwide will be below the 10 year average due to acreage restrictions.
A damaging wind and rain storm struck Coffeyville yesterday afternoon breaking glass in the downtown. Hail was reported at Winfield and Thrall while rainfall totals varied across the region from Como to Chanute. Centralia and Topeka posted light amounts as Chanute logged a high of 100 degrees before the rain cooled it.
Marvin W. Hills Construction Co. of Salina submitted the low bid of $117,721 for the Army reserve training center project in Salina. The Corps of Engineers Kansas City district office reported the government estimate at $132,850.
Joan Ashley of Chanute defeated June Whitman of Wichita two up in the junior division finals. The event was a flight for players under 18 who did not qualify for the championship flight. Connie Schliecer of Chanute fell in the consolation flight on Thursday.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon for Franklin Earl Kidwell 60 mayor of Enterprise Kas who died in a Salina hospital Thursday.

The Kansas Forestry Fish and Game Commission moved toward building a 100 acre lake near the Allen Bourbon county line. Ross Beach Jr. said Wilson and Co. of Salina were authorized to draw final dam plans in Bourbon County on a Marmaton River tributary. The lake, a fishing venue, should be finished within a year, located a mile north of Elsmore and east of the Allen County line. Wildlife groups from both counties urged the project.
Britain's Comet II took off for Moscow in a display flight to the Soviet air show. It marked the first operational flight since the 1954 crashes with air chiefs aboard. Nigel Birch, the air secretary, led the British delegation and claimed the Comet matched or exceeded the TU104.
The Senate kept a dispersal clause in a bill to extend the Defense Production Act for two more years. The provision, added by the Senate Banking Committee, aims to avoid all industrial capacity being concentrated in one area in case of an atomic attack. The measure now moves to a Senate House Conference Committee as the House version lacks this clause.
