Lloyd A. Rosanbalm 46 died Friday after his skull was pierced by a refrigerator door handle at home. He had been unable to work after surgeries. His WWII service as a B29 tail gunner included being shot down and six months as a prisoner of war. His family suffered multiple losses in prior years.
A man formerly claiming he killed two Michigan teenagers and an Oklahoma City taxi driver admitted the confession was a fabrication. Ernest Paul Sims, 26, in Nashville jail on credit card charges, said he changed his story after family input and further questioning.
Pope Paul VI warned of a diffused lack of confidence in his church administration and defended the Curia and bishops. In a 5,400 word address marking his sixth anniversary as pope, he also voiced sorrow over bloodshed in Vietnam Nigeria and the Middle East and renewed hopes for world peace.
Pvt. Freddie K. Macklin 20, of Junction City, was wounded by a guard's shotgun blast at Ft. Riley stockade Sunday night as he tried to climb a fence. He had been held since June 6 on charges of being AWOL for 93 days and is in satisfactory condition at Irwin Army Hospital.
Warren Burger took the oath at 10 42 a m to become the 15th chief justice. The ceremony marked Earl Warren’s 16 year tenure and 52 years in public service as President Nixon lauded his contributions. Burger pledged to defend the Constitution and administer justice impartially, with the retiring justice and seven associate justices present.
Kansas live stock sanitary commissioner A G Pickett announced a ban on importing swine without a special permit. Four cholera cases traced to feeder pigs from Missouri prompted the halt, with permits discontinued except from clean herds under strict conditions.

Mrs. Allen Kirby 45 of 901 S. Ashby died when her car collided head on with another near Marion Indiana at 10 20 a m Saturday. Sister-in-law Mrs. Arnold Kirby was critically injured and the other driver escaped serious harm. Kirby worked at Ashley clinic and is survived by her husband and three children A C 21 Barbara 17 and Brenda 15. Funeral arrangements are by Johnson Mortuary.
A Chanute regular city commission meeting is slated for 7 30 this evening in the Memorial Building commission room. Reports from Ralph Watson Associates on the industrial park study Kiene and Bradley drainage work and Ben Barber on the municipal swimming pool are expected.

Chanute requires firework sellers to obtain a free permit from city clerk Bonnie Moffatt to record stand locations for safety inspections by Fire Chief John Erickson. Sales begin Friday and end July 5, with stands needing to meet safety standards before opening.
The Weather Bureau issued a tornado watch for parts of South central Kansas and central Oklahoma from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. CDT today. Scattered severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds are forecast, with the greatest risk near a line from east of Wichita to west of Oklahoma City.
Four British explorers led by Wally Herbert returned to Portsmouth aboard the Endurance after 477 days on polar ice. They faced ruthless polar bears who even ate rubber boots and harassed sled dogs, while temperatures fell to 45 below zero. The voyage covered 3 620 miles from Alaska, ending May 30 on Blackboard Island.
