The Rev. Richard L. Huggins of Liberty Presbyterian Church in McKeesport delivered the opening invocation. He prayed for divine help amid state frustrations and the frenzy of governing, asking for strength of mind and ability for the commonwealth.
The National Council of Churches agreed to consult with the National Black Economic Development Conference on reparations demands. The council’s executive committee said Christians are obligated to hear claims for 500 million dollars for injustices to Black people amid protests led by James Forman that triggered legal orders in New York City.
The Joint Legislative Committee on Tax Structure led by Sen. Frank Hodge directed drafting bills to impose both a premiums tax and an income tax on Kansas insurance companies. The bills are tentative and could be altered or rejected. introduction is expected next session. Current outside-Kansas carriers pay 2 percent premiums tax. domestic firms are tax exempt.
Dutch officials cut Rhine River water to Amsterdam amid a mysterious contamination blamed for millions of fish deaths. Swimming banned and cattle warned away as purification efforts begin. Rhine normally serves drinking water for about half of Amsterdam’s 2.6 million residents.
A disabled four engine DC4 cargo plane that had just been repaired for a mechanical problem before takeoff crashed into a busy Miami street. It took off at 3 40 p m and eight minutes later struck a residential and business area near Miami International Airport, killing ten and injuring about a dozen as investigators combed charred rubble.
Westbrook Pegler prominent reporter and 1941 Pulitzer Prize winner for exposing labor union racketeering died in Tucson at age 74 after living in southern Arizona since 1942. He left King Features Syndicate in 1962 citing irreconcilable differences and claimed Hearst censorship.
Archeologists will start a 60-day dig on July 1 west of Caldwell near the Oklahoma border led by a state official to study an Indian community about 500 years old. Caldwell amateur Harry Jeniston found the village on the Charles Buresh farm. Four dwellings were located and appear to have burned. Federal and state funds finance the project. artifacts will be shown at Caldwell's Border Queen Museum.
Chanute was under a special alert Monday from 8 45 p m to 9 15 p m as a storm front passed. Police chief Lige Matlock noted ham radio volunteers aided storm spotting and a new siren system remains for outdoor warnings. He urged homes to plan safe indoor shelter and know neighbors.

Bill Cramer was hospitalized with chest injuries from a tossed pickup. Clarence Mayschmeyer and his daughter Ann escaped as their shed collapsed. Wheat and homes were damaged across seven farms in a six mile path. A second tornado damaged a house near Rux ton, Fredonia 80 miles east.

The Chanute city commission heard progress on two plans, an industrial park and a city drainage system. Mrs. Mary Walker aged 76 of 106 S Wilson flew from Champnute to Centralia Missouri and back to visit her daughter Mrs Ruby Prewitt. The Cessna 431 was piloted by her grandson Gary Conklin of Wichita.
A line of powerful thunder storms spawned tornadoes that hit Ripley Perkins and Cushing in Payne County and surrounding areas. At least 12 homes were destroyed or damaged and damage estimates reached about 150000 dollars. No injuries were reported.
