In Reno County centered on Hutchinson, about 200 acres of marijuana grow wild and birds such as doves and quail reportedly eat seeds and zigzag while hunters miss. County crews spray crops with chemicals but cattle refuse to graze on the weed.

John F. Young former city policeman and fireman and probate judge died at 77 after a years long illness. Born April 3 1892 in Louisburg Kansas he grew up in Missouri and lived in Chanute. He served as fireman and police officer before being elected probate judge in 1960. He was active in United Methodist Church and several fraternal organizations. He is survived by his wife Edith and two brothers. Funeral arrangements were announced with burial at Greenlawn Cemetery and memorials to the First United Methodist Church.
Storms thundered across Kansas with heavy rains and hail in several areas. Forecasters warn more showers and thunderstorms this weekend could further delay the wheat harvest as rains spread from northwest to northeast regions. Lyons reported half inch hail and Hutchinson area saw hail earlier this spring. Topeka measured .68 inch of rain by 9 30 am and continued to rain hard.
