Police report says a Wednesday night theft at the Phillips 66 service station at Main and Steuben. Five outdoor electric bulbs, a sign for the women’s restroom, and the sign bracket were taken from outside the station operated by H. H. Larson.
Deputy Sheriff Ray Lacey spotted a bicycle by a culvert east of Topeka and a boy hiding. Three youths aged 13 to 15 emerged when asked, admitting the bicycles were stolen from North Topeka after leaving the Boys Industrial School three hours earlier.
TOPEKA With paving contractors working at top speed the Kansas Turnpike was 62 percent complete on June 1. Paving and surface work cover all but three sections totaling 3.7 miles. A 154 mile stretch from four miles east of Topeka toward Lawrence is finished. Total contracts awarded reach $106,511,000 and right of way costs amount to $9,630,137, about $2.24 million over initial estimates.
Alfred B. Knoblauch age 19 of 106 North Central was arrested on grand larceny charges after stealing a new motor car tire from a local store where he was employed. Police report this occurred today and was filed at police headquarters.
Gov. Fred Hall announced several appointments in Topeka before departing for Atlantic City. William M. Stevick of Topeka was named workmen's compensation commissioner. he has served as general counsel for the Employment Security Division of the Kansas State Labor Department. Other appointees include Armour H. Evans to the State Board of Health, a three year term. Fred B. Ogilvie of Kansas City. Leonard H. Smith of Garden City as sheriff of Finney County. Fred Ice to the Kansas Army Board for a four year term. and Arno Windschefter of Smith Center to the State Water Resources Board for a one year term.
Three persons died in a head on crash three miles south of Noble on U S Highway 77. Victims were Carl Eugene Laxton 32 of Andrews Texas Ernest Huckleberry 34 of Del City Oklahoma and Wanda Lee Huckleberry 32. Seven people were injured.
Kansas accident records show 3 fatalities in the last 24 hours and 278 to date in 1956, compared with 254 for the same period in 1955. One earlier fatality is included in the count.
The Rhode Island Churchman notes an anonymous $20 contribution to Episcopal charities and asks the donor to sign the check. The front page story suggests calling the Tribune carrier or dial 700 after 6 p.m. if the donor cannot be reached.
The Republican National Convention Arrangements Committee expressed confidence that President Eisenhower will run again and that Democrats cannot derail him by health issues. The 46 member group met in closed session to finalize details for the Aug. 20 start in San Francisco and discussed convention length without a decision.
New tensions mark steel contract talks days before a strike deadline as United Steelworkers accuse the industry of a conspiracy to shut down 650000 workers. US Steel, Bethlehem, and Republic praise a five year package with 7.3 cent hourly hikes, while US Steel remains less firm. David J. McDonald blasts the industry ultimatum and calls the plan a conspiracy, with no immediate company reply.
Banquet in Port Huron Michigan raising funds for hospitals sickened more than 100 attendees. Doctors and nurses labored through the night as 37 remained hospitalized today. Food donated by individuals and prepared by a caterer.
Lloyd Carl Seele 16 of Belvue was killed when his car hit a bridge on a county road about a mile north of PAXICO in Wabaunsee County early today.
Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller emerged as a couple planning marriage before July 1 in New York or Connecticut. Miller revealed plans during a House Committee session in Washington while Monroe, in New York, issued a brief confirmation. He cited past political stances but pressed for a passport to accompany Monroe to London where she starts a film with Sir Laurence Olivier. The couple eye New York City or Roxbury, Connecticut for the ceremony.
The Mills Co of Cleveland submitted a low bid of 479 900 for movable steel partitions in the new State Office building. Elevator Sales & Service of Kansas City bid 19 611 for an electric passenger elevator at Emporia State College administration building. Blacktop Construction Co of Emporia bid 25 700 to surface tennis courts at Emporia State. Doane & Spear Plumbing and Heating of Hays bid 13 318 for air conditioning for the Ft Hays State College library.
An apparent low bid of 1 069 700 for construction of a new paints and finishes hangar at the Boeing Airplane Co Wichita plant was submitted yesterday by PDondlinger and Sons Construction Co. Work will begin next Monday and finish near April.
City officials urged residents to refrain from watering lawns washing cars and home washings from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily until further notice. City manager Ross Cooper said the measure is for conservation not shortage as pumps at the water plant are being blocked during connections between old and new clear wells.
A 93-year-old New Mexico woman Mary Ray of Logan died in a car crash caused by extreme heat. Three other occupants were injured. Driver Dale Fitzner 17 of Tucumcari said he blacked out from 100 plus degree heat and the car struck a parked vehicle.
The state saw soaking rains after a hot day with readings reaching 107 degrees at Alton and Hays, Topeka 98, and highs across most counties. Rainfall totals included Smith Center 3.21 inches and Burr Oak 2.18 inches. The storm boosts river levels and flood risks along the Republican and Solomon rivers while forecasts call for continued showers and cooler conditions into the weekend.
A 37 year old truck driver Alfred Wilson ran amok after a quarrel with his wife. He shot and killed his two sisters in law and a 16 year old girl found later in a ditch. A 10 year old boy and another man were unharmed as Wilson forced vehicles off roads in three locales near Cortland and Warren. A manhunt focused near Windham as Wilson fled in an abandoned 1949 automobile. Wilson had been released on bond last June after an assault complaint by his wife.
In Eldora Iowa Secretary Ezra Benson and Senator Estes Kefauver clashed over the 1956 farm program. Kefauver charged delays and bungling by the Eisenhower administration while Benson defended policies and predicted higher farm income if the plan is properly run. Both offered cautions on the soil bank and future years.
Harold Shankland reports from Coldwater Kansas on ranchers pooling 40000 dollars to fund aerial spraying against grasshoppers. USDA and Kansas State College crews operate BT13 planes to cover vast rangeland, aiming to finish by July 1 to halt hopper eggs, with conditions limiting kills.
Ash Grove Limes & Portland Cement Co. and Monarch Cement Co. raise hourly wages by 18 cents effective June 10 for 214 workers at Ash Grove and 225 at Humboldt. Common labor now $1.68 per hour. Class A carpenters $2.05, electricians $2.14, welders $2.11, laborers $1.67. War veterans Day added as paid holiday. Contract negotiated with local AFL unions. Similar increases reported at nearby plants.
Erie county taxpayers owed 115,450 of the 1,526,000 tax bill for 1955 when the payments without interest penalty were due at the county treasurer’s office. Deputy Marjorie Howard said about 1,410,550 had been collected by deadline, with Tuesday the busiest day and Wednesday slow due to wheat harvest. Unpaid taxes now incur 10 percent interest until paid.
Earl Dee Burghart, 23, of R 2, was issued a summons Thursday for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. A hearing is set for 10 a m June 30 in police court. The charge stems from a Friday night accident on West Main Road in which his car rolled over. Burghart, injured, was released from Neosho Memorial Hospital this week.
Wilson County farmer BENEDICT Roy Shively, 40, was killed when a tractor pulling a cutting machine evidently overturned him at the Clarence Seibel farm two miles west of Benedict. The Elk Valley Alfalfa mill operator was found at 5:25 a.m. by plant employee Jim Loflin. Survived by wife, son Howard, daughter Karen. Body taken to Casom Funeral Home at Fredonia. funeral arrangements pending.

He plans personal visits with voters and a major education address in Lawrence Wednesday noon and a Humboldt luncheon Friday. Tour includes Junction City Milford Wakefield Clay Center Monday and many more through Saturday.
TOPEKA Kansas commercial grain storage plants with a capacity of 403 million bushels were 63 per cent filled on June 1. Stocks on hand reached 255 million bushels an all time record while available storage space stood at 148 million bushels up from 93 million a year earlier. Capacity has grown 134 million bushels since 1954 and has more than tripled since World War II. Much growth centers on large terminal hubs.
In Erie, Clyde Webb faced assault with intent to kill and resisting arrest charges as the State case went to the jury in district court. After a midday recess and judge B M Dunham’s instructions, the jury began deliberations and will reconvene Monday for a civil action, Mary Dent versus Calvin Harfare et al, seeking $15 000 in damages from a traffic collision.
