First prisoner locked in Tulsa’s new jail

AP reports the first inmate was secured in the maximum security cell during a tour led by Police Commissioner Brad Scheer. A door malfunction trapped him until a locksmith freed him, as inmates are planned to move into the new Tulsa jail late tonight or early Saturday.

Marine Pvt John Krenning Returns to San Diego Depot

Marine Private John Krenning 19 returned to San Diego from Wichita Kansas after twice running away from the San Diego Recruit Depot. He had hitchhiked to Wichita earlier this week and was found wandering in the Mojave Desert by the California Highway Patrol for the first escape.

Murchison Dies at 74 in Athens Texas

Millionaire oilman Clint Murchison Sr. died at Henderson County Memorial Hospital in Athens after years of declining health. He grew wealthy by oil between the world wars and was once valued between 109 and 500 million dollars. His interests spanned oil, gas, railroads, publishing, transportation, real estate and leisure businesses.

State hospital at Larned to start job placement program

The Kansas state hospital at Larned will launch a job placement program on July 1 to prepare patients for new jobs and suitable work environments. Craig Williamson of Larned directs the effort and seeks $600,000 to build a new facility for program participants. until approved, participants stay in the old rehabilitation building and return to their wards for sleep and recreation.

Terrorist Attack on GM Building in Montevideo

Terrorists attacked a General Motors building in Montevideo causing about 1 million dollars in damage. Two gunmen disguised as police tied up two watchmen and sprayed offices and cars with gasoline hose. Pamphlets blamed Nelson Rockefeller and GM for aiding repression.

Inmate Work Details Return After Penitentiary Disturbance

Kansas State Penitentiary resumed inmate work details today after a disturbance Wednesday following a Tuesday night shakedown that seized knives and contraband. Warden Sherman H. Crouse said a reduced patrol remains outside and the confiscated items are still locked up awaiting inspection.

Woodson to Direct Penal Institutions

Gov. Robert Docking announced Col. R. N. Woodson will replace Charles D. McAtee as director of penal institutions on July 1. Woodson, former Leavenworth sheriff and city police chief, vows a 30 day system evaluation and addressed eight prisoner grievances while noting four requests granted and three deferred.

Stamp Burglary Hits Chanute Post Office Vault

Thieves entered the Chanute post office after hours and used an acetylene torch to pry open the vault, taking an estimated 120000 six cent stamps and possibly as many as 500000 total. Investigators from Neosho County and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation joined postal inspectors in the probe.

Blood Drive Ends Day One With Surplus For Neosho County

The Red Cross bloodmobile collected 103 pints at Zion Lutheran Church in Neosho County on day one of a two day visit. Blood collection continued today from 9 a.m. to 2 15 p.m. The county was 103 units short of its quota but donations from day one erased the deficit and day two aims to keep the surplus.

Harvest Trickle Signals Start Of 1969 Wheat Harvest

Harvest activity spreads through southern Neosho and Wilson Counties as fields dry from recent rains. First samples come in from Thayer and Galesburg with 3,800 bushels at Thayer and light receipts at Galesburg. Wet fields slow cutting, but observers expect a good yield if dry weather lasts a week or two.
