House Committee Orders Post Office to Cut Services
The House Appropriations Committee told the Post Office Department to curtail mail services and live within reduced funds to avoid a repeat of the spring 1957 fiscal debacle. It cut 1.642 billion dollars from the department’s request for 1.492 billion to supplement a prior 3.192 billion dollar appropriation for the fiscal year starting July 1. The committee favored zoning second and third class mail to save about five million dollars and urged reducing star routes to once daily where practicable for about 700 thousand dollars.
