President Johnson urged Americans to avoid cheap mudslinging and celebrate the American system. Speaking at Cleveland Hopkins Airport before about 15 000 cheering with a promise to preserve and protect, he urged restraint and focus on the country’s positives.
Washington Senate leaders pressed to pass the civil rights bill this week amid rapid amendment battles. Thurmond urged up to 16 amendments amid a 13 hour session while Humprey and Mansfield warned a Saturday session may occur if needed. Johnson urged a national manpower policy at the AFL-CIO convention, warning machines replacing workers and a growing labor force demand education and cooperation among labor management and government.
Robert J. Hotchkiss 48 of Chanute announces his bid for Neosho County Probate Judge on the Republican ticket, subject to the August primary. A real estate salesman, he has three children, is an Army World War II veteran, and belongs to the Masonic Lodge AF and AM, the Scottish Rite, and the Methodist church.
Construction begins between Altoona and Fredonia by Freto Construction Co of Pittsburg. Heavy equipment is on site and earth moving has started. Mrs W A Moore of rural Altoona reports several large trees have been removed from her property two miles west of Altoona.

Kansas Corporation Commission postponed the July oil production figure after independent oilmen urged closer review of crude purchases. The hearing was pushed to June 30 to assess the effect of a 260000 barrel per day allowance, the lowest in 14 years, with 273650 barrels per day nominated for July by purchasers.
A Santa Fe passenger train struck a car at a north Wichita crossing, killing 38 year old Ralph W. Cauthon Jr. of Wichita. He taught at Wichita High School North.

Bill Matlock, 16, of Earlton fractured his left foot and leg above the ankle when his foot was caught in a tractor power takeoff while spraying in a pasture two miles east of Earlton. The accident occurred about 10 45 a m. He was taken to Chanute for treatment and was home today.
District Lions 17 KE will hold its annual convention and officers training Sunday at the Tioga Hotel. Lions from 24 clubs attend with a wives program, officer training, and a 5:30 banquet featuring Dr. Robert McCullough of Tulsa as speaker. Attending also will be Claude De Vorss of Wichita, Boyd Tarras of Independence, and Kenneth Pitchey of Caney.

The Commerce and Federal Reserve data place May figures at near historic highs, with unemployment dropping to 3.6 million and a 5.1 percent jobless rate, while President Johnson heralds continued growth in an election year.

In rural Kansas a 42 year old Shetland pony named Cricket draws tears from Kay Crumrine of Odessa as she visits Meadow Lawn Farm near Iola. Cricket, born 1922, outlived typical pony lifespans, having a long storied line of owners and a life linked to Crumrine since childhood. The Hayes family, who own Cricket since 1956, learn their daughter was born the same day, March 30, 1922, adding a touching coincidence to the tale.
An AP report notes Lord & Taylor intercepted women's topless swimsuits at Fifth Avenue while other New York retailers plan to stock them without promoting the style. Melvin Dawley, president of Lord & Taylor, objects to marketing the swimsuit as fashion.
