Good Wheat Crop Ready For Harvest

Neosho county farm agent Bill Dickson says the wheat crop is ripe and standing but fields are muddy and slow to harvest. He notes the wind should help dry fields and expects a better average yield than last year with early cuts reporting about 40 bushels per acre.

New Diesel Power Unit Arrives For City Plant

City officials report one of two new diesel power generating units has arrived and could be moved to the plant site tomorrow. A Topeka moving firm will handle the transfer with a second unit possibly arriving from Kansas City for a single continuous installation. Plant site lies on the west side of Garfield Street near Walnut. Delays persist in plant preparations and equipment delivery, pushing back touted July 6 start to meet summer peak loads.

L K Barham of South Santa Fe road announces his candidacy for county commissioner from the 3rd District on the Democratic ticket subject to the August primary. He is a Neosho county lifetime resident, married with one son Lloyd Jr an engineer in Independence Missouri, and four grandchildren. Barham farms and works in the oil industry and runs a service station south of Chanute with his wife.

Uncommitted Kansas delegate faces pressure at convention

Henry Bubb, president of a Topeka savings and loan and Kansas State Board of Regents chair, is one of 18 uncommitted Kansas delegates. He says he will vote for the candidate he believes is best for the nation and his party, despite heavy pressure and mail from supporters of Goldwater Scranton Rockefeller. He plans to attend the San Francisco convention with his independence intact.

Weather area forecast for Kansas with showers and cooler weekend

A cold front brings thunder showers to eastern Kansas with a shift to westerly winds. Friday will be partly cloudy and cooler with highs in the mid 80s and lower 80s inland. Overnight lows range from the 50s northwest to near 70 southeast. prior highs ranged from 81 in Topeka to 97 in Garden City and Goodland.

Two 18 year olds held on charges of petty larceny

Kenneth D. Jeffers of Lakewood Heights and Lyle D. Yowell were arrested at 12 50 a m after a gas line theft in progress. They admitted responsibility for several recent thefts including spare tires wheels and a wheel tire hub and brake shoe theft from a Fisher Chevrolet case. The arrests followed a tip from Sterling Martin and were confirmed by Sheriff George Neely and Police Chief Lige Matlock.
