Showers moving into Northwest Kansas early today and across the state tonight, ending in the east by Wednesday. Temperatures in the 80s today and 60s tonight. Monday highs ranged from 77 at Concordia to 86 at Pittsburg Garden City and Hutchinson. early lows from 60 at Goodland and Hill City to 71 at Pittsburg.
Kansas traffic death log lists 33 fatalities in June by 9 a.m. Tuesday. For 1964 the total is 262, compared with 231 in the comparable 1963 period.
Earl Beeler Jr of Erie withdrew his appeal to district court from a police court conviction for driving while intoxicated transporting an open bottle and speeding. Beeler paid a $160 police court fine yesterday. Arrest was Feb 15 and July trial had been set for today.
A break-in at the Mc Coy filling station on Highway 39 East last night saw theft of cigarettes 10 15 cartons, candy bars, ice cream, gum and peanuts. Glass panes were broken at east and front doors, with no money taken. This marks a second such break-in recently.
In New Orleans two barges crashed into the world's longest bridge before dawn, pushing a Trailways bus into Lake Pontchartrain. Six passengers died while the driver and an Army sergeant were rescued by a teenager. Coast Guard helicopter transported survivors to hospitals as divers recovered the six bodies.
A Senate subcommittee opened hearings in Washington on the sale of infants for adoption and heard that children can be sold for as much as 7500 dollars on the baby black market. Chairman Thomas J. Dodd opened the session noting a clandestine interstate and international trade. The inquiry considers a bill imposing up to five years’ imprisonment or a 10000 dollar fine for profiteering in adoption placements crossing borders, excluding legitimate welfare agencies. Witnesses included Katharine Oetinger of the Children’s Bureau and Theresa Heath of the New York City Police Department.
Three candidates are entered in the Neosho County Dairy Princess contest with possible late additions.
