Chlorine Disinfection Guide For Safe Water Use

Guidelines advise mixing one heaping tablespoon of chlorinated lime into two gallons of water and using one part of this solution per 100 parts water. Allow thirty minutes for action before use. Chloride hypochlorite bought fresh from drug stores loses strength after opening. For cisterns and wells use two ounces per 1000 gallons. If a chlorine taste is present, treatment is effective. if not, more is needed. Different waters react differently due to sediment and other chemicals. If contamination is suspected, contact the county health officer or State Board of Health for testing and safe corrective steps.
