Escapees vanishing from Alcatraz prison in 1962

SAN FRANCISCO AP reports three inmates led by Frank Lee Morris escaped from Alcatraz in a carefully planned breakout. They reportedly tunnelled through plaster walls using spoons, accessed a service shaft to the roof, and fled toward the water in a 50-foot drain pipe. FBI coordinated search covers northern California.

Kansas Expected to Receive Widespread Showers This Week

AP reports another round of showers forecast for Kansas with thunderstorms that began in the northwest overnight and will move southward and then across the state by Thursday. Brewster recorded 2.70 inches of rain and Goodland 2.14 inches as K27 flooded during the night.

Enrollment climbs at Pittsburg State for summer term

Pittsburg State College reports summer enrollment of 1,801, about four percent higher than a year ago. Dr. C R Baird, director of admissions, says late enrollments could push the total past last summer's final count of 2,183.

Penal Post Interview For Women

Two women were interviewed for the Kansas Women's Industrial Farm superintendent post. Applicants are Miriam D. Phillips of Santa Rosa and Elenore M. Kent of Detroit. Two False Fire Alarms Reported Here Yesterday

Two false fire alarms were telephoned to the fire department yesterday, one at 3 55 p m and the other at 9 44 p m, both from Lafayette addresses. The caller sounded like a girl about 12 to 14 years old and police on duty heard the calls. Fire trucks were dispatched to 207 S Lafayette and 407 S Lafayette as a precaution. Intentionally false alarms are a misdemeanor with fines up to 100 dollars.

In Haworth England AP reports Reverend Charles Manchester warned he would halt weddings when grooms arrive drunk. He complained in his parish magazine that half of bridesgrooms smell of a brewery and suggested banning the line something old something new and something brewed.

Dream of Adventure Ends in Rescue for Two Boys

Two 14 year old Kansas City youths William Cullison and Gregory Mills set out on a makeshift raft in the Kaw River inspired by Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. They carried worms, beans, air mattress, Bible, radios, clothes, books and more. Police spotted them after midnight and five units followed the river. Officers directed them to shore peacefully.

Unity Urged For Building New Algeria

In Tunis the Algerian provisional government urged Muslims and Europeans to join in building a new Algeria after independence, promising a social and agrarian revolution after the July 1 vote. Premier Ben Khedda rejected revising the ceasefire with de Gaulle, stressing rights for Europeans remain as is.

Relationship With Estes As Customer Relates To A Fraud Case

AP Washington Maynard C Wheeler president of Commercial Solvents Corp testified before a House subcommittee that his company’s relationship with Billie Sol Estes was strictly customer supplier and not beyond. He disputed testimony by Frank Cain that Estes sought to set up business in Brazil with CSC and denied offering secret deposits. Wheeler explained CSC required collateral to back credit and noted Estes signed over government grain storage payments as security. He described how CSC obtained collateral and defended prudent lending practices while noting the large, multifront Estes enterprise collapsed after Estes’ fraud indictment.

Capsule Parachute Trial Successful

A full scale Mercury space capsule model was parachuted into Trinity Bay in Houston as NASA crews tested an improved parachute system. Spokesmen said a model of the upgraded capsule will be dropped in about 20 days, with the remodeled capsule ready for testing in about a month. The new design replaces a parachute with retro rockets to reduce impact.

Armed Men Sought In Missouri Farm Region

Kansas City AP reports Bates County Sheriff Clovis Sivall says two gunmen, one armed with a rifle and the other with two revolvers, are being hunted in the South Grand River bottoms near the Cass Bates line. One suspect may be Roy Lee Engberg, a Denver ex convict tied to a slaying of George Wilber, with additional federal fugitive and robbery charges. A helicopter search was requested with highway patrol aid.
