A line of severe thunderstorms swept diagonally across Kansas overnight from southwest to northeast. The system produced hail, heavy rain and high wind. Temperatures were forecast to remain in the 60s to 90s with show ers and possible thunderstorms continuing Friday morning.
A federal court receivership sale in Kansas City raised 30141 from six judgments against Sutcliffe Pipe & Supply and others. Items and buyers included leases and equipment in Neosho Bourbon Allen counties with bids from Micro Products Corp J G Louis Tim Thompson and others. Proceeds to liens and tax claims. The sale was led by special master Jim Guinette with about 30 spectators and six bidders.
Mrs Freda Cripps of Berkeley California attends the Johnson Safari Museum third anniversary in Chanute. She shares memories of her explorer brother Martin Johnson, plans to publish a 500 page manuscript, and recalls the $1500 bronze bust donated for the exhibit. The museum notes 47,734 visitors in three years.
A two car collision near the Shawnee-Wabaunsee county line left three youths dead and three injured. Victims are Robert Eddy 16 Maple Hill Darrel Renbarger 17 Topeka and Jerry Herrick 16 Burlingame. Survivors include Thomas Long 16 Dover Wayne Childers 16 Topeka and Ronald Mitchell 16 Eskridge. One car veered into a ditch and the other hit a telephone pole on Willard Dover Road.
Washington AP The House debates a proposed 533.2 million salary rise for 1.7 million federal workers with a 7500 annual boost for Congress members. The bill fronts increases up to 22.5 percent for federal career employees and postal workers, and for Supreme Court justices and top officials.
A head on collision in heavy rain on U S 40 eight miles west of Junction City killed 75 year old Ross McNeece. Kansas Highway Patrol identifies him as one of the drivers in the fatal crash.
The Liberian registered Pomona, sailing toward Formosa with 9,500 tons of scrap, resumed under a new skipper near Honolulu after a fire in the engine room forced 30 crew to abandon ship in liferafts. Four hours later the crew were back aboard as a tug was awaited. The old crew had refused to sail following Capt Natvig's May murder with an axe.
Washington AP reports the Equal Pay Act of 1963 goes into effect today under the Fair Labor Standards Act, covering over seven million women. The Labor Department cautions many may not receive raises, as enforcement targets wage discrimination by sex and allows penalties up to 10,000 dollars, with possible imprisonment on a second offense and back pay remedies.
Senate refused to widen the civil rights bill exemption for owner operated boarding houses to more than five rooms. An amendment by Sen. John S. Cooper would raise the limit to 10 rooms but failed 51 to 17. A separate Southern sponsored double jeopardy amendment passed 79 to 17 after modification to exclude state laws, prohibiting second trials for the same act.
