Gary Michael Apostle eleven year old son of Mr and Mrs George Apostle of Kansas City drowned yesterday in a swimming hole in Brenner Creek near here.
A tornado and severe thunderstorm forecast was issued for parts of the Texas Panhandle western and northern Oklahoma eastern Oklahoma Panhandle and south central and southeastern Kansas. Scattered severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes were expected from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. CST with an area about 60 miles on either side of a line from east northeast of Amarillo Texas to Chanute Kansas.
Viola Manly of 1201 N Washington suffered a knee injury when her 1948 Pontiac hit a 1952 Chevrolet pickup at Garfield and Hickory around 12 10 a m yesterday. She was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital for examination and released.
Two St. Joseph men were killed yesterday when a drill rig struck an overhead power line during a well drilling operation. The victims were Robert Fulton, 48, an inspector for the State Public Service Commission, and Charles Bennett, 54.
Pedro Garcia aged 93 was fatally injured when struck by a car while walking to church in Kansas City Kas yesterday. Authorities investigated the crash and identified the victim.
Illinois auto mechanic Louis Girard arrives in Washington with 6800 mothers signatures seeking American trial for his brother William S. Girard in the death of Japanese woman Naka Sakai. A 180 foot petition scroll and 325 petitions accompany the delegation hoping to override a decision to try William in a Japanese court.
The Rev. Judd H. Jones was returned to his pastorate at First Methodist Church for a ninth year after the 19th annual Kansas Conference session in Coffeyville. Bishop Dana Dawson announced ministerial reassignments including Emporia and Independence Districts with multiple churches listed. A resolution favored returning prohibition in Kansas and urged Congress to ban liquor service on American aircraft.
Melvin Stierwalt 15 son of Mr and Mrs Walter Stierwalt 33 W 4th reported improving at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a Saturday night traffic accident in Humboldt. He suffered a slight concussion and heavy head facial wounds requiring over 70 stitches. He was a passenger in a car driven by Humboldt youth Ronnie Sallee. both the driver and trucker were not seriously injured.
Kenneth Guenth er was unanimously elected clerk at the annual Benedict school district meeting Friday night. Other board members up for reelection were Charles Parker director and Charles Tarter treasurer. Patrons voted for a nine month school term for both the grade and high schools starting August 30.

President Eisenhower suffered an upset stomach and sickness overnight but three doctors found no link to his 1955 heart attack or last year's ileitis. Hagerty said he is progressing very satisfactorily with stable vitals and no nausea since morning. Vice President Nixon anticipated Ike back in the office tomorrow as he prepared to preside over the Senate.
A 16 year old Eric boy formerly of Chanute ran away and was found with a stolen car near the Katy depot in Parsons. Owner Paul Clark of Parsons identified the vehicle. The youth had returned from a Fort Scott trip with two Chanute boys who were unaware the car was stolen. He was released to his mother pending Labette County authorities’ disposition.
Floyd H. Murphy a 31 year old Wichita man died early today becoming the second fatality in a collision between a Santa Fe freight train and his car at a crossing in Augusta Saturday night. His wife was reported slightly improved but still in critical condition in a Wichita hospital. The couple’s 10 month old son William Joe died on arrival at Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Saturday night. Murphy died about 2 30 am today at the El Dorado hospital.
London papers report the 1,554 ton freighter Athlit sailed through the Aqaba Gulf waterway to Eilat breaking an eight year Arab blockade. In Washington the Supreme Court ordered a new hearing for California sex offender Cary Chessman in a 5-3 decision, citing his nine year fight to escape San Quentin’s gas chamber.
Former President Harry S Truman in New York expresses pessimism about Russia before boarding a plane to St. Louis. He is visiting his grandson. Mrs Truman remains in New York with their daughter for a few days.
The annual derby at Elks Lake drew about 190 young anglers. Douglas Drisdell caught the heaviest fish a 42-pound channel cat earning a glass rod and reel. Connie Clark won for a 14? pound bass. In boys 27 fish ties were shared by Charles Cummings and Danny Rausch while Sherry Kueser led girls with 27 fish. Elks Club served 25 cases of pop 600 hot dogs and seven pounds of chips during noon. Sheriff Lee Montgomery reports a burglary at the Frederick Swan grocery and mercantile store in Erie. Between 650 and 700 dollars was stolen from the store safe along with cigarettes and clothing. entry was made by forcing the south door with a three pound hammer.
Coffeyville resident Ivan Henry Golding aged 55 died in a hospital from injuries suffered in a two year collision near Edna about a mile west of the U.S. 166 and K101 junction. Two others in the other car William D. Mayfield 18 and Leon Arnette 18 of Arkansas City sustained minor injuries.
Charles Frank 50 longtime Humboldt resident and KG and E manager died of a heart attack Saturday while en route to Neosho Memorial Hospital. Born June 3 1907 he served with Eastern Kansas Utilities before KG and E takeover and led the Humboldt office 12 years. Survived by wife Winifred daughter Janice son Gary and niece Helen Wise. funeral Tuesday 2 p.m. at Humboldt Presbyterian Church. Burial Mount Hope Cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home Humboldt in charge.
Clifford Dutton ten years old suffocated yesterday after falling into a wheat storage bin at Maize grain elevator. He was buried under grain for over ninety minutes before workers removed the wheat and recovered his body.
State Accident Records Section lists 215 traffic fatalities to date in 1957 and 271 in the same period of 1956 with data covering the last 48 hours.
Area representatives from 15 cities met in Parsons to form a non profit organization, Mid-America Inc., to promote new industry in southeast Kansas. An organizing committee will seek a state charter with a $50,000 yearly fundraising goal and a $100 annual membership fee. Chanute leaders urged internal effort and pledged local support despite the Parsons plan.
