Two youths died in a collision on U S 40 two miles west of Sweet Springs after swerving to avoid a tortoise. Dorsey Allen Brown Jr. 17 Higginsville and Alfred Allen Stalken 18 Aullville died in the crash. Wilbert Lee Schnackenberg 20 Warrensburg was injured and taken to Memorial Hospital in Lexington. The driver George Leslie Marrah 42 Clarksville Tenn, said the tortoise avoidance caused the wreck.

Train wreck in Colorado kills 12 farm workers
A Santa Fe freight train struck a truck carrying farm workers west of Vroman near Rocky Ford Colorado killing at least 12 and injuring five or six. The truck crossed the tracks at an farm entrance near Vroman. One victim was identified as Sylvester Licano of Rocky Ford.

Week of Camping For 33 Girl Scouts
The Girl Scout camp at Camp Wonderwood opened with 33 scouts enrolled for the week. Brownie day camp precedes a week of activities including archery arts and crafts and hiking. Stove Blast Fatal to Five in Madison Conn
Five members of the Cooley family died when a kerosene stove exploded in their Madison home. Victims were Mary Cooley 29 her brother Charles Vander Walker 37 and her three children Mary 3 Patricia 2 and Suzanne 10 months. Three others survived including Mary Cooley's father Charles 70 her brother William 34 and sister Leona Handy 39. An investigation found hot water in a washtub atop the stove caused burners to flare and ignite the stove.

Altoona Man Charged With Attempted Murder
Char les Stiles 78 of Altoona was charged with attempted first degree murder after allegedly shooting his wife in the face with a .32 revolver bought the day before at a Neodesha shop. The weapon misfired and did not penetrate. the wife was treated at St. Margarets Mercy Hospital in Fredonia in good condition. Stiles, who and wife celebrated a golden anniversary, was bound over to Wilson County district court on 7000 dollar bond after waiving preliminary hearing.
