Third District World War I Veterans Meet Convenes in Memorial Building
About 150 members attended the 3rd district convention of the Veterans of World War I in Chanute yesterday. Officers elected and installed include Mrs Christine Mereis Parsons vice president and Mrs Eve lyn Wainner Wichita past department president. The meeting set dates for the 1962 department convention at Parsons May 18 to 20 and featured talks and district project reports. Refreshments followed. Chanute barracks and auxiliary hold a potluck tonight at the Memorial building.

Retired Dominican general Diaz dies in Trujillo city gun battle
In Ciudad Trujillo troops and police killed retired Gen. Juan Tomas Diaz the alleged chief assassin of Rafael Trujillo and his accomplice Antonio de la Maza after a house to house pursuit. Diaz age 52 and De la Maza were found refugeing in the city and died from gunfire on the street and in a military hospital respectively. Authorities said De la Maza carried a pistol linked to Trujillo during his assassination. An army communique noted Diaz led the plot following retirement from the Dominican army. Police reported a total of eight band members killed or captured in subsequent reports.

Katherine Myers, 16 months old, was described in good condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a tractor driven by her father Park Myers backed over her in the garden yesterday afternoon.
