Federal judge orders limits on freedom rides in Alabama

U S District Judge Tyank M Johnson Jr issued sweeping decrees aimed at stopping the latest racial challenge. Three Car Crash Near 15th and Santa Fe

No one injured in a three car crash about 4:45 p.m. at 15th and Santa Fe. Vehicles involved were a 1948 Dodge pickup driven by Frank C. Davidson Jr. R 1, a 1953 Ford driven by Donald D. Thielenhaus of Rantoul Illinois, and a parked 1959 Buick owned by John Volpe of 1317 S Evergreen. Damages were $75 to the pickup, $150 to the Ford, and $50 to the Buick. Police report Thielenhaus attempted to pass on the right, Davidson turned right, and the Ford struck Volpe’s Buick after hitting the pickup.

Two-Year Sentence For Cheating Attempt

Robert E. Ressler of Wellington Kan was sentenced to two years in federal prison on charges he tried to cheat the government out of 225. Judge Delmas C Hill refused probation and recommended Ressler be sent to the medical center for federal prisoners at Springfield Mo. He is 52. Ressler received a monthly disability compensation check for injuries in World War II and said he did not receive his February 1989 check and asked for reissue.

Mark Gardner ten died from injuries after a bicycle truck collision in Kansas City. His father Dr H Bailey Gardner directs public information for the city school system. The accident happened Monday.

Burglar Killed In Lawrence Store Break-In

Lawrence lawmen report a grocer killed one burglar and wounded another after two men broke into his Big Springs area store near Lawrence. The dead man was tentatively identified as Herman Lee Tillery, 31, of Osceola Missouri. The wounded man, Arthur Kaysor, 61, of Ottawa Kansas, was taken to Lawrence Hospital. The store operator, W C Long, said he fired once with a shotgun, after which one intruder died and the other fled. Police found the surviving burglar hiding nearby about 90 minutes later.

Fire Captain Foils Suspected Firecracker Plot

In Olatha Kansas Fire Captain Abony Benoit heard whispers near the quarters. He spotted four youths who fled as police arrived. The group left four large firecrackers with fuses inserted in half cut cigarettes, described as slick and dangerous.

Four Year Old Critical After Hoist Accident

A four year old Chanute boy, Roger Tarn, is in critical condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a portable hoist toppled and pinned him. His father Gene Tarn was in Nicewaner Electric Motor Service when the incident occurred about 9 o clock.

New York AP reports Cuban bantamweight Jose Rigores, 25, died from injuries sustained after a knockout last Monday night. It marks the third ring death in the United States this year.

A&P Official Shot to Death By Son

Robert Woodruff Besch Sr. 42, an assistant sales manager for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., was shot to death by his 14 year old son Robert Jr. with a 22 caliber pistol. Police said the boy, a Newark Academy ninth grader, admitted the shooting after being found brandishing two pistols in the living room. The elder Besch held several community roles including trustee of Short Hills Country Day School and Overlook Hospital director.

Final Trip By Boosters to Chanute Centennial Tour

The final car caravan of Chanute boosters for the centennial celebration planned to depart Sen ior High School at 1 PM with costumes.
