A two hour hailstorm battered Selden Kansas causing roofs to collapse, 15 inches of ice on the ground, and isolation of the town with 45 National Guard troops deployed. About 40 residents sheltered at the telephone exchange building as damage spread to businesses and homes.
The Kansas Boat Company announced expansion of its fiberglass boats into eight states including Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, and Missouri. A Brownsville district attorney ordered one boat for personal use, signaling dealer interest after seeing Chanute products. In Chanute, Terry Sutcliffe, 16, became the youngest licensed pilot in the United States after soloing in a 1959 Cessna 172, following eight hours of dual instruction.
Fire destroyed a 1950 Ford spray truck en route to Erie on highway K-57 two and a half miles west of the US 59 junction at 6 30 a m. The truck owned by William Tole of Independence was driven by Joe B Rains 40 Cherryvale with a passenger escaping injury. Cause undetermined.
Police report a 1953 Olds from OK garage at 1415 Santa Fe was damaged by a hit and run between 7 30 last night and 9 today while parked opposite the garage. A 1954 Chevrolet owned by William G Neeley at 762 FE Main had door damage from a backing pickup driven by Eildon D Vaughn of 918 S Lafayette.
Kansas accident records list traffic fatalities for the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. To date in 1959. Comparable period shows 1956 figures and earlier totals.
The United States Britain and France may cut their 10 000 man West Berlin force if the Soviet Union drops its demand to end Western occupation rights. Gromyko signals possible flexibility while Khrushchev com m not yet clear Western pledges to protect West Berlin seen as symbolic rather than military.
The Senate approved a 485.5 million dollar civilian space program for the coming year. The measure, 81 to 1, funds NASA operations, research and development, construction, equipment, and salaries. It preserves Nike and Bomarc missile programs at reduced levels.
DES MOINES AP Four long term convicts who escaped from the Iowa Penitentiary at Fort Madison were captured in south central Iowa. Three were nabbed by highway patrolmen and sheriff's deputies near Albia, while the fourth, Elun Girdler Jr., 23, of Peoria Illinois, was stopped near Tyrone. The men include Lloyd Wodson 38 of Quincy Illinois Albert Boerger 26 of Kansas City and Robert Jones 24 of Cedar Rapids. They escaped by sawing bars, threatening guards, and climbing a fence before fleeing.
The annual meeting of the Fairfield Joint School District 110 is set for Friday June 5 at 8 p.m. in the Fairfield School.
One hundred twenty pints of blood were collected at the Red Cross drive at First Methodist church by 1 15 p.m. The quota was 160 pints. Twenty three pints were designated for Kerry Fullerton, a 19 month old boy from Kansas City, for a July heart operation. Bloodmobile to visit Erie tomorrow.
Justice court in Erie continued the case of Andy Cook of near Kimball for leaving the scene of an accident until June 17. Cook posted a 250 dollar appearance bond after authorities identified him as the driver of a pickup that struck 6 year old Glenna Baucom of Kimball, who remained in satisfactory condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital in Chanute.

Four black mice blasted aloft in an Air Force attempt to return living creatures from a satellite failed to reach orbit after radio signals ceased 13 minutes into the flight. The project sought to study survivability and instrumentation for future Mercury space efforts.
Forecaster notes considerable cloudiness with scattered thunderstorms through Friday and little temperature change. Heavy rains and hail hit northwest Kansas causing localized flooding near Selden and Dresden, with up to five inches of moisture from rain and hail. Ground remains ice covered in Dresden. additional showers and thunderstorms expected across western and central areas today and tonight with 80s expected Friday.
Police reduced dead from eleven to ten after investigation linked body parts to a man identified by a monogrammed lighter. Fifteen others injured on a busy eastern Pennsylvania highway near Pottsville as propane truck exploded.

Chanute Humboldt and Iola officials traveled to Topeka to discuss protests with the Kansas Corporation Commission regarding Cities Service's proposed rate hike. City Manager R. J. Hayes and City Clerk Howard Parsons joined the talks. The rise, about five cents per thousand cubic feet, would apply locally while the FPC rules. Money collected would be held in escrow and returned if the increase is denied.
Douglas Shelton a 15 year old high school freshman in Pineville West Virginia captured a cat with wing like growths in the woods following a dog chase. The female cat measures about 30 inches with a bushy tail and white fur resembling a Persian. wings about six inches long appear bone less but cartilaginous in shape. The wings lift when the animal is angered and a local veterinarian says he has never heard of such an animal.
In Charleston Missouri farmer Armont Oliver watched his domesticated geese wade into a pond and sink after a field spray by a hired pilot. The birds, grazing cotton fields, were engulfed by insecticide spray that dried oil sacs on their skin. Oliver rescued them, puzzled by the incident and its cause.
The Society of the Plastics Industry will distribute warning placards to about 9,000 National Institute of Drycleaning members. The placards warn of suffocation risk from thin plastic film and urge removal of plastic film wrappings from children.
City Manager R J Hayes announced departmental transfers moving John Leroy from police to the light plant as maintenance and extra fireman, Kenneth Stroup from the fire department to police patrolman, and Charles Record to lead one police shift. Leroy joined city service in 1943 and 1951, Stroup since 1958, with retirements planned for Emery Lewis Bert Toomey and transitions to Reed and Record in key posts.
Maurice Chevalier, 70, French star, is confined to his Vienna hotel with a severe chest cold. A Paramount Pictures spokesman said his doctor from Paris was flying in to treat him.
Gov George Docking states there are no important recent differences with Kansas Corporation Commission chair Marion Beatty. He suggests rotating the ECC chair may improve efficiency but says the decision rests with the commission. He also notes discussions with Beatty and Harry Wiles about rotation ongoing for months.
