Three Killed Near Oberlin in U S 36 Crash
Three people died and two were seriously hurt in a two vehicle crash east of Oberlin Kansas on U S 36. Victims identified include John H. Davis 36 Belleville Vernon Simmons 38 Mankato and Florence B Winsatt 43 Portland Ore. Russell Winsatt 43 and Nora Lee 14 were hospitalized in Oberlin. The Winsatts were heading to Richmond Mo to attend funeral services for Winsatt's brother in law. Elvin Lavern Thomas 44 of Richmond was involved.

Parson s Freeto Construction Co of Pittsburg emerged as the apparent low bidder for nine miles of US59 improvements north of Parsons with a bid of 103 803.44. The project covers base and asphalt surfacing from the Labette Neosho county line to the K57 junction south of Erie, with a detour in place and traffic barricades. State bids also included Greenwood and Cherokee county work, Nelson Brothers of LaHarpe bidding 203 477.83 for 12.4 miles of US57 improvements, and Francis Reeves of Columbus bidding 6 943.77 for Kilin Cherokee county grading. Freete received a 42 028.25 contract for a bridge on the same road.

Beulah Michigan report states Mr and Mrs Elvah Haley were arrested in Parsons Kansas charged with arson and conspiracy to burn a Bendon Michigan house for insurance. Fire in Butler Missouri killed Burge Simpson 65 year old invalid after she returned from a neighbor visit to find her room in flames. Fire Chief Rodney Grimm said smoking in bed apparently started the blaze. Simpson had been bedridden for several months.

Two men on horseback paused in Wichita while riding the historic Chisholm Trail toward Abilene. Ralph L. Hooker and Merrill Hooker Jr. of Carthage Missouri began their roughly 1000 mile journey on May 2 and expect about three more days to reach Abilene, 90 miles away.

Three children in a Mulvane family were killed in a Highway K15 collision southeast of Mulvane. The mother Ruth Lewis about 32 was in serious condition and a son Ronald about 8 in critical condition at a Wichita hospital. Rex Minson 33 of Udall the truck driver was treated for injuries.

Lloyd Earl Hull, 30, of Topeka died when his car collided with a truck drawn combine loaded trailer on U S Highway 24 five miles east of Topeka. Driver Marvin Gene Bolt, 22, Lawrence, escaped injury. The convoy of harvest equipment belonged to N R Hamm of Perry Kas, a 27 man 18 unit outfit known as Hammstown operating from Texas to the Dakotas.
