Khrushchev Arrives in Vienna for Kennedy Talks

Premier Khrushchev enters Austria by iron curtain gate and visits Vienna for weekend talks with President Kennedy. He cites desire for personal contact and easing international tension, notes talks with Antonin Novotny and Molotov’s reassignment. Security patrols and a special train accompany the Soviet leader toward the Austrian capital. Kennedy-Khrushchev discussions set for Saturday and Sunday.

Museum tribute opens for Osa and Martin Johnson

Chanute residents praise the Safari Museum as it nears its June 11 opening. Mrs. Belle Leighty and Mrs. Freda Johnson Cripps, visiting from Berkeley, toured the collection and called the project a dream come true. The exhibit recalls the Johnsons as explorers authors and photographers with South Seas and African expeditions and world famous books and films.

Bible School Plans By Churches Here

Seventeen Vacation Bible Schools are planned by local churches for children from kindergarten through junior high. Parades and ice cream prizes accompany the two week and one week sessions across several congregations with dates announced for each church and August plans pending.

Charges of Trespass Against Pickets

Second-Half Taxes Due

ERIE The deadline for payment of second half taxes for 1960s on real estate and personal property is June 20. Neosho County treasurer Freda C. Locke reminded taxpayers today. Penalties will be added after the date. Descriptions of the property must accompany the remittance or be returned and could trigger penalties if not received by the treasurer before the deadline.

Free Street Draws Strong Attendance for Centennial Events

Free Street shows on Thursday nights at the celebration headquarters on 118 E. Main continue to draw crowds. The main act last night was a western string band featuring Nathan and Acey Welch, with Kay Welch as vocalist, joined by Joe Curbon and George Lopeman. Billie Whitworth sang with accompaniment from Leeva Carter.

Kennedy De Gaulle End Three Day Talks on Berlin Pact

Paris AP Kennedy and De Gaulle wrap three days of talks with a communique pledging that Western rights in West Berlin must not be altered by force. Kennedy, speaking at a luncheon, says discussions gave confidence for the Vienna meeting with Khrushchev and notes hope for progress in Geneva talks on Laos and a nuclear test ban. He praises Britain and France and urges Western unity to fight global misery.

Barnes Scholarship Awarded to Mrs Elsten at Chanute

Mrs Harlan Elsten of Chanute received the first Mary Harrell Barnes scholarship for junior college women. She graduates top of her class with a 2.82 index and will attend Pittsburg State College next fall alongside her son James, who will transfer from the Air Force enlistment. The $75 annual award honors academic potential and need.

Centennial graduates honor Kan sas pioneers at Chanute ceremony

Dr. Gene Conklin of Sterling College delivered the commencement address in the Memorial Building as about 1,700 attended to honor 179 graduates. He noted the Chanute Senior High School and Junior College class as the Centennial graduating class with a unique distinction in Kansas history.

Record May Rainfall in Chanute Exceeds Earlier Years

Rain totaled 10.85 inches in May surpassing most prior months. The Neosho River overflowed its banks twice as a result while the city watches year to date totals rise above 1951 and 1956 records. The FAA note places Chanute rainfall near the record levels with only a few months higher since 1950.

Evangelist Billy Graham 41 defied medical orders and left his sick bed to travel to Manchester by train for a Saturday rally in the north of England. Aides said he would address an expected crowd of 60,000.

Four Family Members Die in Pratt Crash

Dr Zane Gard his wife and three children die when a station wagon is hit by a tractor trailer on US 54 near Pratt Kansas The accident also claims Mrs Gard and her father Herbert Weseman and leaves two other children and three truck occupants injured or shaken Investigators cite gusty winds as a possible factor in the wagon crossing the highway.
