Best Man Sought for Kansas Forestry Fish and Game Director

TOPEKA AP The Forestry Fish and Game Commission seeks the best man to lead the agency as director. Chairman G. G. Boling said there are several applications and more may be welcomed, with pay up to 12000 annually. The new five member panel aims to appoint a biologist under 60 who can lead and work well with others. The commission plans meetings in Pratt and other cities and intends to reopen ties with resources statewide to boost local fishing and wildlife programs.

Youth Dies in Tractor Accident Near La Cygne

A 16 year old youth, Sammy Brooks, died after a tractor he was driving overturned on a hillside county road four miles south of La Cygne Kansas. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Louis Brooks who lived on a nearby farm.

Little Boy Drowns After Falling Into Water Bucket

Jackson Tennessee AP reports James Anthony Eaton aged one fell head first into a five gallon bucket of water on his parents’ back porch and drowned. The accident occurred Wednesday.

Weather and flood threats in Kansas with hail reports

Rains continue in Kansas pushing the Solomon River over its banks at Osborne and menacing downstream areas. Baseball sized hail reported near Goodland with damaging hail and strong winds in Sherman County. Eleven Killed In Two Crashes In Michigan And Texas

In Michigan near Port Huron five graduates and friends died when their car hit a bridge at 90 mph after leaving a party. In Texas a car carrying a fisherman's family and a friend collided with a freight train, killing six and injuring Linda Rose, 8, as a seventh occupant endured critical injuries.

Burglars Break Into Cha nute Farmers Co op Building

Break-in at the Cha nute Farmers Cooperative Assn. at 707 N Highland was interrupted by the manager during a feed transaction. Police reported at 5 30 a m that intruders fled leaving a small black bag with a punch hammer and pry bar. Entry was gained by a window in an overhead door on the west side near Santa Fe tracks.

Demonstration Reveals Trouble in Long Distance Dialing

In Memphis a telephone company official showed direct long distance dialing to a civic club. John Ryan dialed four times with four wrong numbers before reaching the Montreal Weather Bureau, where the forecaster spoke in French.

462 Traffic Deaths Over Memorial Day Weekend

The four day Memorial Day holiday period recorded 462 highway deaths, the worst toll for a Memorial period in U S history. The 102 hour weekend saw 683 violent accident deaths including 40 boating deaths and 63 drownings.

Motorcycle Tractor Crash Statess Fatality

A 26 year old Pittsburg State College student, Charles A. Barnhart of Liberty, Kansas, was killed in a Wednesday motorcycle collision with a farm tractor on a county road just north of Coffeyville. The tractor driver, Frank Walterscheid, 74, from near Coffeyville, was uninjured as the tractor turned onto a field.

Paper Carrier Killed in Kansas City Collision

Virgil LaFollete a 14 year old newspaper carrier died when his motor scooter collided with a car in the 8500 block of Kansas Avenue in Kansas City Kansas. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Vernon La Follete of Kansas City Kansas. The father is a contract carrier for the Kansas City Star.

Congress extends taxes on tickets and goods for one year

The House Ways and Means Committee approved a one year extension of 3.6 billion dollars in existing excise taxes on passenger tickets, telephone service, alcohol, tobacco and other goods. The plan moves to the House for quick action. Taxes would expire or drop on July 1 without action by Congress. The core 52 percent income tax is included. The vote was 22 to 3 in closed session with a party line fight over the 10 percent passenger transportation tax.

Linda Campbell leads the Miss Centennial queen contest for the third consecutive week as Jane Evans and Jackie Churchill follow. Evans wins the weekly transistor radio prize. final turn in is due by 8 p.m. next Wednesday. John Capehart Wins 1961 National Spelling Bee

John Capehart, 12, of Tulsa Oklahoma, captured the 1961 National Spelling Bee title in a 25th round victory over Mary Lukes of Oxnard California. He spelled distichous and then smaragdine for the championship amid 73 initial entrants, with 49 girls and 24 boys in finals.

Short Causes Fire Damage To Home

A fire damaged the roof of a residence at 409 N. Grant owned by Claude Wanamaker and rented to Mr and Mrs K L Trumbull. Fire Chief Brennan estimated a loss of $300 or more and noted the fire started from a short caused by a slack television antenna guy wire contacting an electrical line. Firemen responded at 3 45 p m and stayed about an hour. There was no interior damage. May brought the last of 11 departmental runs, with total May loss around $1 150 and year to date about $10 500.

Four-Year-Old Boy Bitten by Rattler Near Rushville

Four-year-old Darrell Dean Hughes was bitten by a 20-inch rattlesnake Wednesday. After swelling left him unable to stand, police escorted him 19 miles to Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph where doctors found fang marks and treated him with serum. His condition was reported as good. The Hughes family lives on a farm near Rushville. the father killed the snake.

Nebraskan Captured After Police Chase

An Indianola Nebraska youth identified as Donald Ridpath about 20 was chased by Kansas and Nebraska officers before he ran into a police car and was captured. He was held in jail in Oberlin Kansas for speeding. Ridpath suffered scratches and bruises as his car collided near McCook Nebraska, about 27 miles north of Oberlin.

Topeka Youth Wins United Nations Contest

David Griesedieck of Topeka won the Kansas high school United Nations contest with Frank S Bangs Jr of Wichita finishing second. Griesedieck, a Hayden High School senior, received a $250 college scholarship under Kansas UNESCO and the national UN project.
