Erie bypass opens to traffic on US 59 south of Parsons

The 6.093 mile Erie bypass on US 59 opening last week includes a new Neosho River bridge and will replace most of the old route into Erie. The bridge will be kept as a county road north south access, while the old US 59 alignment is largely decommissioned.

Guatemala Fire Kills Over Two Hundred Inmates

In Guatemala City a blaze roared through an insane asylum killing well over 200 inmates with the toll likely to rise to 300. Firefighters, police, and volunteers faced long hours of rescue as many inmates were trapped and others escaped into nearby schools and government buildings. President Ydigoras directed efforts throughout the night.

Kansas Pilot Dies in California Crop Plane Crash

A crop spraying plane struck a half inch lightning arrestor cable above high tension lines and crashed near Arvin California killing William B Fields 36 of Wichita Kansas instantly. The single engine biplane demolished in a cotton field fifteen miles south of Arvin. Fields leaves a widow and four children. funeral in Galt Missouri.

Frankfort Crash Fatal to Couple in Highway K99 Collision

A young Butler couple married less than two months died in a crash six miles south of Frankfort on Highway K99. Joseph Allen Rest 18 and his wife 18 perished, while Thomas Ray 19 was critically injured and taken to a Marysville hospital. The trio had left Butler Tuesday night en route to Idaho.

Five Hundred Tons Of Explosives Fail At Nevada Test Site

LAS VEGAS AP Five hundred tons of high explosive was triggered at the Nevada test site but failed to detonate. An AEC spokesman said the failure would be studied and the firing area closed until technicians determine the cause. The non nuclear charge lay 125 feet deep as part of Project Plowshare for peaceful atomic energy uses.

Sarah Churchill Found Guilty on Public Drunkenness

London AP reports actress Sarah Churchill, 45, daughter of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, found guilty on the fifth and sixth counts of public drunkenness. She pleaded innocent as fines totaling 50 shillings were imposed and Magistrate R H Blundell warned of possible custody for a medical report before further action.

Three Injured In 1 Car Crash Near Elks Lake

Three people were injured in a one car crash near Elks Lake 22 miles north of Chanute at about 2 45 a m. Ward Barnett driving the car 33 was blinded by oncoming headlights and veered off US 169 hitting fence posts and trees ending near a spawning pond. Barnett will be charged with reckless driving. Meritt Criss Carol Hiser were hospitalized at Neosho Memorial Hospital with rib fractures a dislocated shoulder and a broken ankle. The car suffered about 1000 in damage and wrecker service was used.

Soldier Dies After Junction City Crash Near Highway 18

In Junction City a 49 year old Ft. Riley soldier Sgt J C Lanardo Viray was killed when his car left Highway 18 and struck a tree. His companion Pvt Learon E Brown suffered contusions and lacerations.

Pair Bound Over To District Court In Forgery Case

James John from San Bernadino California and Craig Cooley from Sealey Oklahoma were bound over to district court and jailed in Erie in default of $2000 bond each after arraignment in city court. They face two counts forgery and passing forged checks. Trial date is October term. They allegedly cashed a $24.94 check at Donaldsons Grocery on July 6 and tried another at Olsons Supermarket. Cooley was arrested in Erie and John was captured in Coffeyville.

Falling Tree Fatal To Sedan Man

Louis E. Taylor 42 of Sedan Kansas was killed when a tree fell during a logging project northwest of Hamilton He worked for Clyde Taylor Logging Co Madison a firm run by his brother and was fatally injured yesterday according to AP reports

Girl slips sleeping pills in coffee during hostage case

A 17 year old girl drugged paroled convict Danny Seaton who held the Rogers family at gunpoint in New Franklin Missouri for five hours. Seaton, 26, was captured after demanding money and planning to drive off in the Rogers wagon. Police credited Sheriff Delgar Wells and Trooper J R Phillips with the capture during the standoff.

A 15 year old Wichita girl Barbara Ann Whitson drowned at Lake Eucha southeast of Jay Oklahoma. She slipped into the lake when a bank section caved in while she and another girl walked the shore. Sheriff deputies and Jay firemen recovered her body about an hour later.
