Kennedy formally accepts the Democratic presidential nomination and selects Lyndon B. Johnson as running mate to calm Southern resistance. The move draws protests from liberal wing while denying a Knight report of a Johnson push.
Donald Ervin Stephens, 39, was clearing brush when he fell from a bulldozer on a steep slope in Wyandotte County. The unmanned machine rolled into a ditch about a half mile from the scene, killing him.
Washington reports that the administration plans a special Latin American loan fund up to 500 million dollars to back housing and land resettlement. The program would offer long term dollar loans repayable in local currencies with direct grants only in special cases.
Premier Nobusuke Kishi and his Cabinet formally resigned in Tokyo, clearing the way for Hayato Ikeda to be installed next week. Kishi, stabbed in the left thigh by an ultranationalist, was in good spirits and hospitalized for at least two more weeks.
Kansas traffic death log records 24 hour period ending 9 am with 1960 figures near 250 and 1959 comparable at about 300 deaths. Data tracks fatalities in Topeka region during the initial 1960 period.
Governor George Docking of Kansas seconded Lyndon B. Johnson for vice president at the Democratic National Convention. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen depart Los Angeles aboard a chartered American jet for a four month stay in a hillside mansion near Lausanne overlooking Lake Geneva. The visit follows their arrival in Geneva today.
Sailors loyal to Fidel Castro blocked a commander's bid to defect to the United States using a patrol launch. The Armed Forces Ministry reported the incident as it sought to prevent further unrest within Havana's ranks.
A barracuda attacked skindiver Bob Allen 34 about 200 yards off Pompano Beach injuring his leg and wrist in two passes. He received 30 stitches at a hospital and said the strikes felt like a razor cut.
A Cham ber of Commerce luncheon at the Tioga Hotel focused on improving Chanute's business climate. Topics included the Osa and Martin Johnson Museum and the city recreation program. Phil Cooper reported progress at the museum and discussed directional signs within a 50 mile radius and in Chanute with no admission fee. The Rev. Claude Pittenger agreed to lead a committee to promote the recreation proposal ahead of the August 2 ballot.
The Kansas Board of Regents asked the Legislature for 32,406,390 to run state colleges in fiscal 1961, a 3.46 million rise to fund a 5 percent faculty salary increase and a retirement plan. Enrollment is expected to rise to 28,022 from 26,645, with 76 new teachers to handle growth.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed Bartlett and Co. Grain's wheat filled elevator in Goodland Kansas city. The 45 000 to 50 000 bushel bin burned after flames rose from the top. Firemen fought 3 1/2 hours as grain expansion forced wheat out of the building. The second Bartlett elevator remained intact.
Hurricane Abby struck islands off Honduras north coast causing limited damage. Eight small houses on Guanaja Island were destroyed but there were no casualties and banana plantations survived the storm.
About 60 Santa Fe Railway employees attended the quarterly safety meeting in Chanute. A. F. Ewert of Arkansas City led the session. Carter Harrison of the Kansas Highway Commission performed a safety magic program. H. C. Willis announced his upcoming retirement on Sept. 1 and thanked staff for cooperation, urging continued safety efforts. Light refreshments were served.
Four planeloads of troops from Tunisia and Ghana arrived in Leopoldville to begin the U N force. Maj Gen Henry Alexander led a small Ghanaian detachment amid crowd unrest after Congo civilian deaths. Belgians maintained control as Katanga threatened secession and urged UN access denied.
Two unmasked bandits robbed the Karbe Market in Nevada Missouri taking cash from two registers and several sacks from under the counter. Store manager Walt Hays said the amount was considerable and that customers were unaware of the holdup as the bandits fled in a Cadillac Thursday.
TOPEKA Kansas AP reports a slow warming trend across the state with generally fair skies through Saturday. Tonight and Saturday will be warmer with lows around 65 to 70 and highs near 90. Northwest areas may see brief thundershowers tonight.
Willie Edward Philpot, 30, was executed in the electric chair at Huntsville state prison for the rape and murder of 10 year old Joyce Goff near Longview on January 30, 1959. He confessed to throwing Janis Hunter to her death from a Dallas hotel and attempting to kill 18 year old Trella Joy Carter in a Dallas office building.
A federal grand jury charged Anthony J. Biase Anthony John Cardarella Felix Ferina and Carlton A. Young with conspiracy to prevent a witness from testifying in the Mar celes Case ambush. Cardarella and Ferina fired six shots wounding Kenneth Bruce Sheetz as Biase faces separate narcotics charges. Bonds were set for the defendants and the panel also indicted area businesses for evading federal gambling stamps.
The third phase of the summer water safety program is underway at the Municipal pool with over 350 participants. The two week course runs through next week, following the second phase for county youths. A water show titled Neptune's Garden is planned for July 27 at 6 30 p.m. with races, a water ballet, diving, and a princess crowning for a three to seven year old girl entry.
Three Manhattan youths escaped with minor injuries after a car driven by William L. Smith left U S 18 and struck a two foot high concrete wall at a motel edge. The car flipped onto the embankment and slid along the wall. Escorts Royce Estes and Roger Hoffman were 16 and 15 respectively.
The Mark Bright trust fund continued to grow today as Bank of Commerce trust officer reported a three dollar contribution from the Neosho Valley Home Demonstration unit.
