National League sweeps All Stars with 6-0 victory

In a 6-0 win at Yankee Stadium the National League pounded four homers to sweep the All-Star series. Eddie Mathews and Willie Mays homered for the NL while Stan Musial and Ken Boyer added key drives as Whitey Ford took the loss.

Serious Water Leak Repaired by Workmen

City officials reported a six inch water main break at Main and Malcolm last night draining about half the city water tower. Seepage began around 6 pm and the leak worsened by 7 pm before repairs by workmen at 9 pm. Cause of the break was unknown and pumps could not prevent the loss of tower water.

Thayer Youth Shot Self While Cleaning Rifle

A 15 year old Thayer boy, Frank Haviland, was listed in satisfactory condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a .22 caliber rifle discharged while he cleaned it. He was brought by ambulance from Thayer yesterday afternoon around 4 10. The bullet penetrated his left shoulder but caused no serious injury.

Hoodlums Charged In Kansas City Narcotics Case

A Jackson County grand jury charged two Kansas City hoodlums with attempted murder in a federal narcotics case. Ferina and Cardarella indicted on first degree murder charges. both held on 50 000 bond. Also noted: Mafia link alleged to the Omaha Kansas City underworld.

Judgments Awarded in Two Automobile Accident Suits

The district court awarded Thomas Brenner and Gale Bogle judgments of 4500 and 465.45 dollars respectively in auto accident cases. Brenner, 16, was struck by Henry Roehl on April 16, 1959 near the old K39 Plum mer intersection, fracturing a leg and receiving contusions. Bogle, also 16, was injured when his motorcycle collided with Carl Russell’s car on April 28 at Forest and Cherry. Costs were assessed against Roehl and Russell.

Storm Damage at Madison damaged barn and trees

Heavy winds hit Madison Kansas and nearby areas Tuesday causing damage at the George D Lauder farm where a barn was flattened a garage door torn off and screens blown from the home. No other severe damage was reported.

Fish Die After Waste Sludge Pollutes Chanute Lake

The Chanute Country Club seeks 9900 in district court from Warwick Wax Co later PA Color and Chemical Co Freeto Grading Co and Ash Grove Lime and Portland Cement Co alleging waste sludge containing sulfuric acid caused high acidity killed all fish in the club lake in July 1958 and damaged boats fishing and lake use. The club claims damages totaled 9900 including restocking and boat losses and loss of use.

Wheat Referendum Meeting in Erie Details

A Wheat referendum meeting is set for Monday night at 8 o clock in the Neosho County ASC office to explain the issues. Referendum voting will be July 21 with polling places in Erie Centerville Doane Dodd school Chetopa Shiloh Thayer city hall and other sites.

Bonds for Pool Defeated in Erie Special Election

A $40,000 municipal pool bond failed in Erie by 75 votes in a special election. Final tally 318 for, 243 against with ten invalid ballots from about 660 eligible voters. 571 ballots cast. Youth supporters led parades and bicycle broadcasts urging passage.

Two Truckers Held On DWI Charge

McKinley Truck Lines of Pawhuska Oklahoma drivers Leland Mecomber and Robert Doty were arrested for drunken driving open bottle on duty and log book violations. The forecast calls for generally fair and cooler conditions tonight and Thursday with night lows in the mid 40s and Thursday highs in the upper 80s. Kansas cities show varied readings, with Topeka at 82 and Chanute at 99 on Tuesday, and overnight lows ranging from 57 at Goodland to 73 at Pittsburg.
